JOB DESCRIPTION:


To assist students to develop, restore and/or maintain behaviors which support appropriate functioning in school by employing the methods identified in the Behavior Intervention Plan to teach behavior-enhancing skills; functioning as a member of School multi-disciplinary team by providing the students positive interventions and reinforcement, supportive counseling, crisis counseling, and crisis management; assisting the teacher and/or school staff in their efforts to help the students achieve and maintain appropriate behavior management skills.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with school staff to develop, conduct, teach and model strategies used with children with severe behavior disorders as assigned by the Special Education Department.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings and other meetings (IEPs) as directed by administration / supervisor.
  • Participates in the development of the Behavior Intervention Plan and assists in the implementation of the Behavior Intervention Plan, as directed by supervisor.
  • Uses positive reinforcement and interventions, assists students to achieve and maintain appropriate behavior management skills.
  • Assists school personnel to use behavior management strategies, including various intervention and reinforcement techniques, point systems, time-outs, verbal cues, and physical containment as specified in IEP.
  • Assesses and documents student progress with the multi-disciplinary team as services are provided and completes required reporting documentation. Also assists in data collection as needed.
  • Attends MDT meetings and provides input on strategies and interventions as well as perspectives on students and classroom dynamics.
  • Serves as a role model for students and assists students through discussion and by example to develop appropriate communication and behavior skills.

  • Provides behavior management assistance in the classroom, as well as observing students and implementing behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • Assists in providing supervision of students in a variety of school activities and situations, which does not include coverage as a substitute for a teacher or educational assistant.
  • Assist in Crisis Intervention and de-escalation of students and processes with students/staff after crisis episodes.
  • Provide individual student support as directed by supervisor and other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in annual training as assigned by supervisor.
    • Collaborates with administration, related services and classroom staff on program and student needs.
    • May observe incoming students at their current school to assist in determining level of need for behavioral intervention.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects and coordinate the work of others.
  • Knowledge of word processing, database and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to establish rapport with youth and their families and maintain positive relationships with clients, colleagues, supervisors and the community.
  • Ability to follow the goals and objectives in a plan of care.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, mental health or related field and four years of experience in Human Services; OR
  • Associate’s degree in education, mental health or related field plus 7 years of experience in Human Services.
  • Upon hire, complete Registered Behavior Technician Certification Coursework or other Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) training as assigned by Supervisor. Time to complete the coursework will be provided during the work day.
