Job description
This is a full-time reporting position for the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, the nonprofit newsroom housed in the Diederich College of Communication that provides professional, objective reporters for Milwaukee residents who live in the central city.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Reports primarily on health and health equity issues
2. Works with staff leadership to develop ideas and priorities for news coverage
3. Builds relationships with community residents, public leaders and other stakeholders to diversify sourcing
4. Attends events and meetings to learn about the issues readers feel are important.
5. Uses social media and other tools to get the content to the community
6. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree or demonstrated experience

We will consider applicants who have reporting experience at all levels.
Audio and visual reporting skills are a plus, as is knowledge of public records and data visualization
Demonstrated commitment to the use of investigative journalism, and live to develop and execute sustained, powerful stories that spur reform.
Organized and can handle multiple projects under tight deadlines.
Have a collaborative spirit and want to work with a team to give central city Milwaukee residents the journalism they want, need and deserve. You believe that we are all stronger together.
Belief that legacy models for local media’s business and journalism are broken and that new approaches are needed to serve the public and our democracy.
Sharp news judgment and have a record of detailed reporting and powerful storytelling.
Expertise in accuracy and transparency.
Adept interviewing skills: This reporter will need to talk to high-level officials and neighborhood residents.
Ability to work independently under deadlines and juggle a variety of assignments.
Some proficiency – or at least interest – in working with data and public records.
Dedicated o broader team goals. Our team collaborates on many levels, from producing strong visuals and developing promotion plans for our stories to evaluating audience engagement and hosting events.
Strong people skills and an affinity for working with others.
Proficient in social media strategy
