We are seeking an energetic and dynamic Recreation/Wellness Manager.

The Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities (WCBDD) coordinates services for over 1,000 people with developmental disabilities in Wood County. Our mission is to support, empower, and inspire. The ideal candidate will be a highly self-motivated problem solver, flexible, detail oriented, and is a team player with time management skills, organizational skills, and leadership skills.

The Recreation/Wellness Manager assists the Communications and Community Engagement Manager in the implementation of the organization’s mission, vision and values

Job Responsibilities:

  • Management, supervision and development of personnel, including Recreation Therapist, Lifeguard, Recreation Specialist, and Recreation/Wellness Specialist. Verify and approve time cards and, requested leave and disciplinary actions. Provide ongoing direction, supervision and monitoring of employee performance and complete annual performance appraisals. Perform new employee orientation and ongoing staff training. Interview applicants for approved positions and recommend the final candidate for hire.
  • Maintain oversight of Special Olympic, Recreation and persons served Wellness programs. Coordinate, plan and implement recreational, social and fitness activities within the Recreation, Wellness and Special Olympics programs. Establish and maintain policies, procedures and training for Special Olympics, Recreation and Wellness program Ensure a healthy and safe environment for individuals served at all times by maintaining/monitoring safe activities for all participants. Assist individuals served as needed with activities of daily living such as toileting, personal hygiene and eating during Special Olympics and Recreation programming. The performance of delegated nursing tasks including the giving and/or applying of medications as appointed by the administration and delegated to by nursing per ORC 4723.071 and 5123:2-6.
  • Provide appropriate training and competition opportunity in Special Olympics traditional and unified sports activities for all eligible individuals in Wood County. Coordinate participation of athletes in regular practices as well as local, area, sectional, state and regional competitions. Coach teams and/or train staff coaches and/or volunteer coaches to assist with programs. Provide necessary supervision to coaches, volunteers, and athletes as needed at practices, events or other Special Olympics functions. Work with staff coaches, volunteers or other staff in assisting with practices and other functions. Work cooperatively with community members, families, coaches, chaperons, staff and unified partners in all activities. Teach the fundamentals of sports while instilling the values and spirit of Special Olympics. Provide instruction and guidance on soft skill acquisition among the athletes.
  • Responsible for ensuring community integration, exploration, and social enrichment programs for the benefit of the individuals to foster relationships with the community by taking a strong leadership role in creating new programs/events for individuals eligible for WCBDD services based on need and interest. Seek opportunities for individuals eligible for WCBDD services to participate in integrated clubs, community organizations based on their interests. Develop and participate in programs that seek to expand individual’s interests. Work with the Community Engagement Specialist to schedule, recruit volunteers to assist with programming as needed.
  • Plan, manage and coordinate annual budget of Special Olympics, Recreation and Wellness Program in collaboration with Department Coordinator. Work cooperatively with WCBDD Fiscal Department on all expenditures and receipts.
  • Plan, manage and coordinate the operation of the Nichols Therapy Pool. Establish and maintain policies, procedures and training for the pool. Type and distribute Nichols Therapy Pool contracts. Work cooperatively with all WCBDD departments, Service Providers and community groups to schedule swim sessions. Provide necessary orientation to all pool users on pool rules, safety and emergency procedures. Work cooperatively with maintenance/custodial staff and others responsible for maintaining a safe and clean pool that meets all local and state health regulations. Assist in the development and implementation of the Special Olympics/Therapy Pool budget.
  • Schedule lifeguards Nichols Therapy Pool. Serve as lifeguard for the Nichols Therapy Pool as necessary to ensure programs are not cancelled. Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency. Provide emergency care and treatment as required. Enforce rules and regulations regarding safe and proper use of the Nichols Therapy Pool. Duties such as, but not limited to, assuming rotating shifts, working weekends and evenings.
  • Collaborate, consult and maintain effective communication with the Communication and Community Engagement Manager regarding Special Olympic events and activities. Participate in public speaking engagements. Work in cooperation with all WCBDD departments to promote WCBDD and Wood County Special Olympics/Recreation and Wellness. Will assist in the development of news stories on upcoming events as well as results for local media.
  • Maintain effective communication with all stakeholders for the WCBDD and all of the associated programs. Consult with department Coordinator on matters regarding public image/perception of the WCBDD.
  • Oversee the Ohio Special Olympics Wood County budget and provide timely submission of required financial reports in collaboration with Department Coordinator. Plan and carry out needed fund-raising activities to meet the financial obligations of the Special Olympics.
  • Recruit, interview and supervise the Dolores A. Black intern.
  • Will operate a vehicle in a safe and lawful manner while transporting consumers and/or performing other work-related duties.
  • Liaison to the Special Olympics Advisory Committee. Maintain regular contact with committee members on all matters regarding programming and financial activity.
  • Liaison to the Bowling Green Training and Community Center. Serve as a member of the Board of Control and oversee management and schedule of the Dolores A. Black Gymnasium.
  • Active participation as a member of the Health Supports and Provider Relations Team. Maintain effective communication with Department Coordinator and all members of WCBDD Leadership Team. Collaborate, consult and maintain effective communication with other agency coordinators. Assist in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures. Development of department reports. Implementation of strategic plan goals and activities. Compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Active participation in state, regional and local alliances and associations, as appropriate.
  • Facilitate partnerships with Bowling Green State University and other higher education entities to provide observations and experiences for the upcoming workforce.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Must have a bachelor's degree in Human Services, Education, Recreational Therapy, or other related areas.
  • Must have one (1) year of demonstrated leadership with primary responsibility for directing or leading an effective specific purpose committee or function of the Board.
  • Prefer one (1) to two (2) years related experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, as applicable to position.
  • Must have experience in aquatics management and have knowledge of the operation of a swimming pool.
  • Upon employment, will be required to have lifeguard certification issued from American Red Cross, YMCA or Ellis & Associates, within 60 days of hire.

Minimum Qualification Standards:

Must be able to move individuals who are receiving services including adults and children in a safe manner. Must be able to lift, carry, and move office supplies, materials, and equipment required for day to day operations.

If required by the position, you must maintain a current driver's license in your residing state for the purpose of transporting individuals who are receiving services and/or operation of a Board owned vehicle.


Conditions of Employment

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of general orientation.
  • Receipt of acceptable criminal background report from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCII) and county sheriff’s office of permanent address before starting position as required by ORC 3319.39 and/or OAC 5123.081.
  • Receipt of seven acceptable background checks required by ORC 3319.39 & OAC 5123:2-2-02.
  • Must obtain and maintain any training, licenses, registrations, or certifications mandated by the Board and the State of Ohio.
  • Must have a medical examination and a one-step PPD test to determine fitness for duty prior to providing direct care service or within 30 days of employment whichever comes first.
  • Possess/maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record (if required for position) per board guidelines. Note: Use of personal vehicle for transporting individuals requires proof of liability insurance.
