The mechanic repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment in and around the shipyard facility.

Responsibilities

The mechanic

• Examines vehicle or equipment and determines nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
• Plans work procedure using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
• Determines what parts are necessary for repair and requisitions parts accordingly.
• Has knowledge of electrical, fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, brake, and other automotive systems necessary.
• Lubricates moving parts and drives or tests vehicle to verify conformance to specifications.
• Performs maintenance on all vehicles and motorized equipment in and around shipyard.
• Changes oil, checks batteries, repairs tires and tubes, and lubricates equipment and machinery.
• Performs other duties, including fabrication or repair of metal components, such as exhaust systems, chassis repair, and structural repair.
• May fabricate lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other such devices.
• Examines protective guards, nuts and bolts, and specified safety devices and makes adjustments as required.
• May remove, dismantle, and rebuild engine, transmission, clutch, rear end, and other components of drive trains.
• Will be required to wear all of the necessary personal protective equipment, such as hard hats, eye and hearing protection, gloves, and dust and respiratory protection.

Working Conditions

Scheduled days cover Monday through Friday, including weekends and holidays as required. May be required to perform work at remote locations other than at shipyard facility. May be required to work alone and in confined spaces. Works in all kinds of weather. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to mechanical and electrical hazards, ultraviolet light, vibration, noise, and a variety of other physical conditions, such as a proximity to moving mechanical parts, working on scaffolding and ladders at height greater than six feet, working over water, working in confined spaces, dramatic temperature changes, fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, and hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, and respiratory protection are to be worn accordingly.

Physical Requirements

Repetitive sequences that require balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, seeing, hearing, speaking, and an acute sense of smell.

The U.S. Department of Labor classifies this job as heavy work — exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.

Qualifications

The mechanic must

• Be able to read alphabetically and numerically.
• Have vocational education, high school, commercial or shop training, or technical school; in-house training organized study provided by the employer; or on-the-job training serving as a learner or trainee on the job under the instruction of a qualified worker.
• Be able to provide verifiable references of past work experience.
