Shift Technician (Downstream): Entry – Level 3
Salary Grade: Hourly

Basic Function:

Safely and effectively operate downstream equipment (including boxmakers, palletizers, robots and any other related machinery) in accordance with production requirements. This operator will not be solely placed in the two step department or the case packing cell. The expectation is that the team member is capable of being used in either location. The Operator will ensure efficient and effective operation of machinery in the area for a high quality finished product. Troubleshoot problems and clear jams to maintain operational efficiency and quality. Communicate clearly and effectively with coworkers to maintain production flow and respond to changes in production schedule.
Essential Function and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area in accordance with Company standards.
  • Follow all GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) as documented in the policy.
  • Follow all established safety rules and guidelines as outlined in the Employee Handbook, and as stated in the various safety-related training programs. Understand and communicate all hazards and safety issues to the appropriate personnel. Properly use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). (LOTO / work order entry)
  • Operating walk reach truck safely and according to standard.
  • Operating a forklift safely and completion of all required training annually.
  • Operate all equipment located in the case packing cell, including but not limited to the Posimat, Pearson carton erector, Wayne case conditioner, Fanuc Robot, Lantech Wrapper, Seetech, MSK, and bulk palletizer.
  • Facilitate shift toolbox talk at the start of the shift covering safety and production highlights.
  • Communicate verbally, written, or through production spreadsheets.
  • Align with supervisor on department priorities and assist on uptime and line efficiency.
  • Assess labor and direct employees for efficient performance
  • Escalate downtime and quality concerns to the shift supervisor
  • Develop work instructions and one point lessons for equipment set up and operations
  • Perform PMs alongside mechanics and operators
  • Maintain a work environment that is conducive to safe and orderly work flow.
  • Develop fellow employees through the levels program
  • Provide supervisor with feedback on employee performance
  • Work with MPT and maintain equipment at optimal set up standards.
  • Record work orders and input downtime data that will lead to root cause analysis
  • Continuous training for downstream employees on shift. This may include development of training plans for hourly employees on the floor.
  • Maintaining of equipment to OEE standards.
  • Validate downtime is accurate and inputs meet acceptable level of information
  • Sit in with supervisor on employee reviews and provide feedback on employee performance
  • Assist Sidel Technician in overseeing department.
  • Maintain toolboards and all tooling associated with equipment. Reporting broken tools or tooling
  • Perform shift handoffs with other shift technicians on a daily basis.
  • Confirm all quality checks are being completed on shift by downstream operators
  • For all, Set up and make adjustments to machine as required to accommodate product changes. (double check if already in sections)
  • Continuous training for all downstream employees on shift. This may include developing plans for hourly employees alongside the front line leaders.
  • For all, Troubleshoot problems as they arise. Communicate machinery and equipment problems to supervisor and/or maintenance personnel accurately and in a timely manner.
  • For all, Complete preventive maintenance assignments and enter work orders in FMS as appropriate on downstream machinery as directed. For immediate issues, work directly with Frontline Leaders.
  • For all areas within Downstream, communicate changes in the production schedule to coworkers (e.g. countdown and color changes).
  • Troubleshoot problems as appropriate. (For all – ensure troubleshooting included)
  • Utilize Downstream Levels Program training documentation to attain skills needed to increase technical skill over time, and to complete cross training to at least 3 of five sets of equipment.
  • May perform other related assignments at the direction of supervision.
Reporting Relationship: This position reports directly to the shift Production Supervisor.
Education/Experience
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential functions. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform essential functions.
Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
Interpersonal Skills: Good written and verbal communications skills are required. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English. Will need to be able to determine relevant information to escalate and communicate both verbally and in written form. Incumbent must possess effective teamwork and interpersonal skills.
Technical Skills: Incumbent must be capable of learning and successfully applying SAP Mii system for use of production needs. Must be able to quickly grasp operation of downstream equipment and possess the ability to troubleshoot problems on such equipment. Must be able to successfully complete levels program as specified by the Company.
Other: Incumbent must possess a high degree of attention to detail and to production flow. Must be capable of working safely and effectively in a fast-paced, high-quality manufacturing environment. Incumbent must have the ability to interpret and carry out instructions, including Work Instructions, Master Process Book and SOP’s. Must be able to work a 12-hour shift schedule. Incumbent must be willing to demonstrate schedule flexibility as business needs require as well as for coverage for vacations and other absences.
Physical: Must be capable of standing and walking on production floor for length of production shift. Will be required to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Must occasionally squat, bend, kneel, reach, etc., in order to carry out essential functions of the position.
