Position Summary:

Masa partners with Mexican and Latino children, youth, and families in the South Bronx to develop strong learners and leaders who fully contribute to the larger community. We envision a community that is civically engaged, empowered, and educated.

Masa fosters a culturally responsive learning community in which families engage with direct service and advocacy programs to dismantle barriers to success.

The PT Temporary ESL Teacher will teach 2 beginner-level ESL classes beginning in April 2023 and running through June 2023. Classes are in-person at Masa's office and will run Mondays-Thursdays. Students will be assessed using BEST Plus, and the courses will seek to improve participants' English language skills and support them in building confidence speaking English so that they feel better able to navigate the education systems, government offices, employer interactions, and other settings that can affect the immigrant experience.

The PT Temporary ESL Teacher will work closely with an Adult Education Program Coordinator to ensure prospective students are at an appropriate level for the class, and with their supervisor to ensure the courses are interactive, engaging, and aligned to the interests of participating students.

Key responsibilities:

• Developing a curriculum scope and sequence for each course, with clearly stated goals and objectives and grounded in student feedback about areas in which they feel they need the most support to navigate their day-to-day lives
• Planning, leading, and documenting weekly interactive and engaging lessons
• Monitoring student progress and attendance
• Reflecting on course successes and areas for growth and documenting these learnings
• Leading one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions outside of class

Requirements:

• Availability approx. 20 hrs/week April-June 2022.
• Experience developing ESL curriculum and/or modifying existing curriculum to meet student needs
• Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching English to adults; TESOL or TOEFL certification strongly preferred
• BEST Plus certified and experienced with BEST Plus assessments a plus but not required
• Experience working with immigrant parents a big plus
• Highly reliable, organized and able to work independently with minimal supervision
• Spanish language proficiency a plus
