DEPARTMENT: ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES (LANDFILL)

SALARY RANGE: $3,3072.00 - 51,261.60

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is skilled work in the operation of landfill equipment and the operation of the landfill for use by the general public in disposing of waste. Also operate equipment and assist in the recycling department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Operate equipment used at landfill for proper disposal of waste, such as compactor, loader, dozer, and scraper.

2. Performs daily safety inspections of equipment prior to and after use; perform routine service and maintenance.

3. Perform necessary tasks to maintain an orderly environment around the working face of the hill, scrap-metal pile, waste tires, household hazardous waste facility, and the entire landfill property.

4. Load materials for landfill and recycling departments, as needed.

5. Transport materials for recycling department as needed.

6. Operate equipment located in recycling department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, limitations, and safety precautions of landfill equipment.
  • Knowledge of component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of landfill equipment.
  • Ability to obtain necessary information and to complete accurate reports and daily time sheets.
  • Ability to operate equipment over rough terrain and to perform manual labor occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the operation of landfill equipment.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and other regulations governing the operation of vehicles on highways.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and experience in the operation and routine maintenance of equipment used at the landfill. Final decision of appointment to this job will be based on applicant’s ability to physically operate, drive, and perform illustrated tasks described herein.

(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class A or B. Ability to obtain a Sanitary Landfill Operator’s

Certificate.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrections)
  • Heavy lifting & carrying (45 lbs. and over)
  • Walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling
  • Operate heavy equipment

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Works outside in various weather conditions with noise, dust, dirt, mud, fumes, vibrations, and uneven conditions
  • In and with moving equipment
