SUMMARY

The Crew Member is responsible for assisting the Captain with locking, docking, and undocking the vessel, delivering a narrative to passengers of the canal’s place in New York State history, and serving food and beverages onboard. The Crew Member demonstrates excellent customer service by providing an outstanding passenger experience aboard the vessel on the Erie Canal and Genesee River. This position is part-time and seasonal.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Report to work one hour prior to the first scheduled cruise to prepare the vessel for the day
• Set up cash drawer prior to cruise
• Assist Captain with boarding passengers
• Use the Public Address system to deliver safety information to passengers prior to cruise
• Assist Captain in ensuring the safety of passengers on the vessel
• Assist Captain with locking, docking, and undocking the vessel
• Monitor passenger safety, provide direction as needed
• Use Public Address (PA) system to present a scripted historical narration, when appropriate
• Interact with passengers before, during, and after cruise
• Sell and serve food, beverages, and merchandise onboard
• Assist Captain with disembarking passengers
• Prepare vessel for the next cruise/event/charter, including loading and restocking supplies; moving furniture; preparing the cash box; powering up the iPad register; cleaning and disinfecting the floor, windows, chairs, tables, railings, and head
• Respond to inquiries from tourists in the dock area in between cruises
• Remain at least 30 minutes after the last cruise to assist Captain in completing the closing checklist, clean the vessel, and take inventory of food, beverage, merchandise, and service and cleaning supplies. Communicate inventory needs to the Customer Service Agent

REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent communication skills with children, coworkers, and adults
• Ability to resolve problems quickly
• Ability to work in a team and treat co-workers with dignity and respect
• Interest in and ability to share nautical and Erie Canal knowledge
• Excellent service skills; must be able to serve alcohol
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, tie line, and lift up to 40 pounds
• Clear drug test and participation in Corn Hill Navigation Drug Consortium for random drug testing within 24 hours
• Acquire and dress in crew uniform (shirt and baseball hat provided by CHN, khaki trousers or Bermuda shorts, clean deck shoes)
• Keep a neat and tidy appearance with uniform free of stains and tears
• Undergo a credit check
• Obtain and maintain Red Cross First Aid and AED certification
• Complete Department of Health Food Service Training

Corn Hill Navigation is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates the Sam Patch and Riverie tour boats. Our mission is to foster the appreciation, improvement, and sustainability of the Erie Canal and Genesee River for current and future generations through education, awareness, and enjoyment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Compensation $15/hour plus tips
• Part-time and full-time positions available in Pittsford and Downtown Rochester
• Seasonal: May to October
• We are also hiring customer service agents and captains as well in both Pittsford and Downtown Rochester.
