What does a Childwatch Assistant do?

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Provides direction, supervision, and safety for the participants in the child watch room; implements appropriate program curriculum for participants, ages 4 months to 10 years of age. Provides a quality experience to children and parents; focus is on building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families. Childwatch Assistant must role model the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and work daily to develop personal and meaningful relationships with members, volunteers, donors and community.

  • Ensures that this program meets high standards of health and safety, cleanliness and supervision at all times.
  • Nurtures children through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families.
  • Makes ongoing, systematic observations to enhance the efficacy of the program.
  • Maintain accurate program attendance statistics, according to branch procedure.
  • Maintain program site clean and sanitized; immediately report problems to program site, equipment breakdowns, and any unusual situations to the appropriate director.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Follows Channel Islands YMCA policies and procedure; responds to emergency situations according to EAP procedure.
  • Empathetically listen and communicate for understanding. Build relationships to create small communities. Build and nurture strategic collaborations within the community.
  • Participates in Y fundraising efforts.
  • Arrive on time to each scheduled shift, allowing the start/end of program as scheduled. Set lighting, fans, stereo and make any equipment accessible for program participants.
  • Clean off outdoor area to ensure its safety prior to child watch hours commencing. When program hours have ended, return program site to standard by turning fans off, returning all equipment to its designated area, and recording accurate attendance.
  • Ability to conduct scheduled Child Watch program activities; to perform all physical aspects of the position successfully: including walking, standing, bending, reaching and lifting.
  • Work regularly scheduled Child Watch shifts, informing direct Supervisor of any subbing needs two weeks in advance and requesting time off using Shift Planning program.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents. Engages parents as volunteers and connects them to the YMCA.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings.
  • Be available and willing to substitute for fellow employees.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Must be at least 16 years old and work under close adult supervision.
  • Certifications/Trainings required within 30 days of hire: CPR/AED and First Aid.
  • High School diploma or equivalent
