Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Chemist or Senior Chemist I to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).

The Chemist or Senior Chemist I provides technical oversight and subject matter expertise for laboratories and provides day-to-day support and analytical oversight of instrument and method development and troubleshooting. They contribute to general improvement initiatives such as procedure/method development, technician skill enhancement/training, data review, error free reporting and/or integrated safety management systems.

A Chemist (Grade 66):
  • Takes required safety and technical trainings necessary to work in assigned laboratory.
  • Follows analytical methods, plans and conducts lab tests in assigned area per laboratory administrative procedures.
  • Validates, and verifies analytical methods in assigned analytical area per laboratory administrative procedures.
  • Performs installation (with vendor when necessary), maintenance, troubleshooting of the assigned instrument, software, and laboratory facilities.
  • Writes technical procedures in accordance with validated analytical methods.
  • May function as the person-in-charge for preview/review of the safety and hazard controls in different laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities for a Senior Chemist I (Grade 67):
  • Interprets and evaluates lab results to ensure tolerance and acceptability within required analytical limits (Samples can range from clean/stable to highly radioactive/unstable).
  • Recommends improvements in analytical equipment, procedures, techniques, and method development. Includes collaborating with Engineering, National Lab scientists and/or other industry experts.
  • Provides quality control specifications to ensure process consistency, quality, and optimal yield performance.
  • May perform qualitative and quantitative analyses on liquid, solid, and sludge samples for organic, inorganic and/or metal constituents.
  • May run measurement control program across multiple analytical services for quality assessments/audits.
  • May prepare technical reports based on the interpretation of analyzed data.
  • May interface with off-site vendors, STR’s, and procurement to establish service subcontracts to maintain lab instrumentation. Includes installation of new equipment and maintenance of current equipment.
  • Assists in the training development and training of lab personal on proper techniques for operating instrumentation.
  • Provides technical leadership to less experienced chemists and technicians.
  • Leads shift group to conduct analytical work with highly radioactive materials.
  • Acts as lead person or technical advisor on small projects.
  • May function as the person-in-charge for preview/review of the safety and hazard controls in different laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify as a Chemist (Grade 66):
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related science from an accredited college or university and related Chemist experience.
  • Master’s degree in chemistry or related science from an accredited college or university.
The use of protective clothing and respiratory equipment is required when working in a radioactive environment.

To qualify as a Senior Chemist I (Grade 67):
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related science from an accredited college or university and related Chemist experience.
  • Master’s degree in chemistry or related science from an accredited college or university and related Chemist experience.
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility or in a laboratory using radioactive materials.
The use of protective clothing and respiratory equipment is required when working in a radioactive environment.

This is a multilevel posting. Any candidate(s) selected to receive an offer will be offered the position level commensurate with their experience and qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Current SRMC employees preferred. Working experience with Organic Chemistry equipment and techniques to include HPLC-MS/MS, GC-FID, GC-MS and FT-IR.
