DEFINITION: Provides leadership to develop and coordinate partnerships with public and private entities in Missoula County to implement aquatic invasive species (AIS) prevention, survey, monitoring and control efforts in Missoula County.
REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK: Works with public and private landowners to create cooperative AIS management areas to develop long term AIS management plans; and to develop and implement integrated invasive species management programs. Works with lakeshore HOAs in Missoula County to create and expand collaborative AIS management efforts, facilitate communication, strengthen networking, foster cooperation, and provide leadership and support for weed management groups. Identifies training resources; organizes teams to provide education to lakeshore homeowners and water managers; develops and delivers educational programs and materials on aquatic systems and AIS issues; conducts seminar tours; and teaches landowners about long term vegetation monitoring. Collaborates with the research community and participates in projects to develop new AIS survey, monitoring and control practices. Establishes and monitors research and demonstration plots. Researches and identifies grant opportunities, writes, formats, prepares and submits grant applications. Prepares samples and obtains letters of support needed for grants. Tracks grant information, submits reports and monitors progress; maintains records; writes project summaries; assists with the preparation of periodic financial and performance reports; ensures compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. Works with Montana FWP, Montana DNRC and the USFS as well as other NGO on the prevention, early detection and management strategies for AIS. Performs monitoring for aquatic invasive species within the watersheds that impact Missoula County as well as coordinate monitoring with partner organizations. Manage data and report results to partner agencies. Manages the Clearwater Watercraft Inspection Station and staff in coordination with Montana FWP. Creates and maintains the budget and solicits donations for new and established AIS projects and programs. Attends County Weed Board and County AIS Board meetings and provides an annual report to the Boards and provides input on the Invasive Species Management Plan and goals. Performs related duties as required or directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree required. Degrees best suited to this position are Agriculture, Natural Resources, Botany, and Biology. Course work in botany, plant ecology, range management, soils, or weed science, communications and group dynamics is desired. Training in writing grant proposals is desired. Requires three years of experience working in an agricultural or plant science field which included experience with noxious weed control methods. Experience writing grant proposals is desired. Experience organizing groups is desired. Special Requirements: Requires ability to obtain a Government Demonstration and Research Pesticide Applicator license within four months of hire. Requires a valid Montana Driver’s license.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: Work will require both considerable time in an office setting or meetings, and significant time spent in the field. Outdoor work may involve considerable physical exertion such as walking over rough/uneven terrain, bending, stooping, and occasional heavy lifting (50 to 125 lbs.) in all types of weather. Involves occasional use of protective clothing and occasional exposure to herbicides. Requires driving, out-of-town travel and frequent evening meetings.
