We are looking for a water technician apprentice with experience in construction and maintenance of pipe laying, water service, fire hydrant installation and water meter sets & exchanges. This a great opportunity for an experienced apprentice to gain a solid foundation needed for career advancement to Journeyman level work (Water Technician I) at OUC.

The ideal candidate will have:
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
- CDL Class A Driver’s license required within 6 months of promotion;
- One (1) year training as a Water Technician Apprentice.
- FDEP Level 3 Water System Distribution Operation License is preferred, but not required

Salary Range: $22.15 - $24.90 (Est. $ 46,086 - $51,810 annually - will receive a review every 6 months)

Job Purpose:
This is an experienced apprentice position in a craft area job ladder with advancement to Journeyman (Water Technician I) level work. This employee has at least one year’s experience in construction and maintenance of pipe laying, water service, fire hydrant installation and water meter sets & exchanges. Is exposed to and trained in more technical duties of Water Distribution career path. No work is performed on pressurized systems without the direct supervision of a Water Technician II or above.
Primary Functions:
- Demonstrate proficiency as an apprentice through training, completion of all sections of the field sign-off manual, testing, and field performance;
- Trains for servicing & driving 56000 GVW dump truck, 24500/28000 GVW crew & 52120 GVW low boy tractor trailers is required. Usually involves driving in city traffic and on narrow roadways;
- Trains in specialized skill such as operation of medium duty heavy equipment such as front end loaders, backhoes, boom trucks hydraulic equipment, Directional Drill Machine and mechanical tools /devices associated with water utility work under the general supervision of a Water Technician II or above;
- Trains to operate & service various motorized equipment such as air compressor, diesel pumps & generators as required;
- Trains to perform all tasks necessary to install small diameter service laterals (¾” – 2”), water meter boxes, and set to proper grade;
- Trains to perform small diameter wet and dry taps for service connection. Involves bending, twisting and straining in confined, sandy or muddy work areas;
- Trains to correctly work & document investigation orders (GO’s). Includes accurately reading water meters with no errors;
- Trains for FDEP Level III Water Distribution Operator’s license. Level III license must be obtained before advancement to the next level can occur;
- Work overtime and respond to call out for work at all hours, on weekends/holidays and in all manner of inclement weather;
- Other duties as assigned.
Technical Requirements:
Working knowledge of, but not limited to, the following:
- Knowledge of: mathematics to include graphic arithmetic, principles of mechanical concepts, reading comprehension;
- Use of materials, equipment, and water utility work methods;
- Water / plumbing or mechanical systems;
- Use of the following equipment:
- Trucks (e.g. 56000 GVRW, crew/dump trucks)
- Hydraulic equipment
- Mechanical tools/devices associated with water utility work
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Abilities to include:
- Taking direction and demonstrating an eagerness to learn;
- Completion of pre-requisite FDEP Level 3 Water Distribution Operator course;
- Wear and use various safety equipment (breathing apparatus, etc.)
- Must demonstrate good communication skills and the ability to follow orders;
- Must have good attendance record and must be willing to work overtime;
- Good sense of direction and knowledge of the OUC service area;
- Must demonstrate ability to perform all duties safely and proficiently within the first year of employment. Includes all basic job duties related to pipe laying, water services, fire hydrant installation & water meter exchange;
- Must be mechanically inclined;
- Must be physically coordinated and capable of strenuous manual labor including but not limited to bending, stooping, climbing, twisting, pushing, pulling and lifting, often in excess of 50 pounds. (See physical requirement sheet);
- Must satisfactorily complete a practical skills assessment.
Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required;

Working Conditions:
This job frequently involves working in extreme weather, heights, and exposure to excessive noise. This job occasionally involves exposure to noxious fumes and insects. This job is rarely exposed to chemicals. Employees are expected to work overtime and respond to call out for work at all hours, on weekends/holidays and in all manner of inclement weather.
Physical Requirements:
This job consists of constant standing, speaking and hearing. This job consists of very frequent walking, pushing, pulling, and/or digging and very frequent use of hand tools, shovels, axes, etc. This job consists of frequent lifting of 0-20 lbs. and 21-40 lbs. This job consists of frequent bending/stooping and climbing (ladders, stairs, hills) and frequent use of ½ ton 56000 GVW trucks. This job consists of frequent driving a company vehicle. This job consists of occasional lifting of 50+ lbs., reaching over head, kneeling, crawling, typing/CRT (attention to detail), and detailed inspection/ reading/ editing. This job consists of occasional work with portable gas, hyd.& pne. equip. This job rarely consists of sitting, writing, or use of heavy equipment.
