Job Summary

Execute a variety of assignments in support of the waste management program to ensure worker safety, regulatory compliance, and proper identification and packaging of waste for final disposal or safe storage. May be required to make entries into radiological areas to assist with waste characterization and waste packaging issues.

Oversee MPPB demolition and report the area of the plant being demoed and waste being packaged. Ensure that waste is properly packaged and documented on SOP 300-07 Appendix D. Identify up-coming areas of the MPPB to be demolished and communicate to the Waste Characterization group to ensure the required packaging is available.

Education/Experience

  • High school education plus two (2) years of post-secondary education in engineering, scientific, or technical discipline or the recognized equivalent.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related experience such as Radiation Control Technician (RCT), Safety Technician, Environmental Technician, or Operator at the WVDP or other DOE/Commercial radiological facility.

Licenses/Certifications

NYS Asbestos Worker Certification is preferred.

Additional Position Requirements

  • Subject to Shift Work.
  • Personal Protective Clothing.
  • Respirator Qualified.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the MPPB
  • Knowledge of MPPB Demolition WIP.
  • Training in DOT and RCRA.
  • HAZWOPER, Rad Worker 2, ACM Worker a plus.

Other Requirements:

  • Rad Worker II, Respiratory Protection, OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training required.
  • Works under minimal supervision. Following accepted methods and procedures. Seeks management guidance when necessary.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to document and communicate the precise actions that occur daily during demo and what was packaged into the intermodals.
  • Working knowledge of various computer software including Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 badge which requires an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) background investigation, OPM clearance for this badge is required following hire.

  • Ensure that the waste management activities of a job are properly planned, in compliance with waste management practices, and executed properly by reviewing work documents and coordinating activities with appropriate department personnel following policies and procedures.
  • Identify up-coming projects that will require waste management involvement by interfacing with Work Planners on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that the waste is properly identified and characterized prior to being generated by assisting the work crews with identification and resolution of issues/questions.
  • Ensure that the requirements of the waste certification program are met by reviewing SOP 300-07 Appendix D paperwork before a container pickup request is made; identify errors and seek resolution.
  • Stay abreast of current work activities by attending project daily briefings, Plan of the Day (POD), pre-job and post-job briefings.
  • Resolve waste sampling, packaging, or paperwork issues that may arise by providing support to the Work Group Supervisors.
  • Completes reports by gathering information; develop and distributing reports from gathered information, as required; developing and distributing the reports.
  • Maintain detailed notes of daily activities and provide turnover to and from the day WGS Tech and Waste Characterization Engineers to understand what was done on that shift.
  • Ability to enter radiological areas, if necessary, to assist and identify special items and debris being packaged.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
