Mars Hill University
Mars Hill University (MHU), a premier private, liberal arts institution, invites nominations and applications for the appointment of Vice President for Advancement. Located in one of the most beautiful regions of the Eastern United States, the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, the university is approximately 20 minutes north of Asheville, NC and 45 minutes southwest of Johnson City, TN.
Offering baccalaureate degrees and master’s degrees in 34 majors and 35 minors, the University is dedicated to the development and enrichment of the 1050 students that they serve. MHU is a diverse community with a student population of approximately 48% female, 52% male, 39% first generation college students, and 34% of the traditional students identifying as persons of color. Various academic programs are offered through Adult and Graduate Studies (AGS) which features non-traditional pathways to degree completion. MHU also offers The Honors Program, a unique curricular program that features a multi-disciplinary approach that complements the University’s interdisciplinary general education core. Athletically, MHU competes at the NCAA Division II level in the competitive South Atlantic Conference. MHU has 23 DII sports teams, eSports, clubs, and intramural sports.
Founded as the French Broad Baptist Institute in Madison County in 1856, MHU is an academic community rooted in the Christian faith. Additionally, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Linville Falls and Cavern, Biltmore House and Gardens, and the Blue Ridge Parkway are within easy driving distance.

Mars Hill University seeks an experienced, innovative, development executive with a strong record of accomplishments in fundraising and fundraising administration. Reporting to the President and serving on the Cabinet, the Vice President for Advancement (VPA) is responsible for overseeing all areas under the purview of the Office of Advancement and for positioning the University before its constituencies to engender trust, goodwill, and financial support. The VPA will provide leadership to the following positions that are direct reports: Major Gifts Officer; Director of Foundations Engagement and Prospect Research; Director of Donor Relations; Gift Services Associate; Administrative Assistant for Advancement; Director of Alumni Relations; Director of the Mars Hill Fund; Advancement Services Associate; Advancement Relations Associate; Alumni Relations Resource Consultant. The VPA will also have close working relationships with MHU’s leaders in Marketing and Communications, as well as outside advancement counsel.
The successful candidate should possess a record of achievement in higher education fundraising or a related development context, including capital campaign and major gift solicitation experience, and knowledge of best practices in advancement. He/she will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to relate to and communicate with all university constituents and stakeholders about MHU’s mission. This strong leader will be of high integrity with proven networking, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Fundraising experience with institutions grounded in the Christian faith is a plus. A baccalaureate degree is required; an advanced degree is strongly preferred. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
