About the Position
The Tree Trimmer II position maintains and trims campus trees of various heights to promote their health and appearance. This position often requires the use of special climbing equipment such as ropes, climbing spikes, safety belts, and supplemental rigging and aerial personnel lifts or aerial ladders. The incumbent reshapes trees and canopies, trims or removes dead, diseased or unsightly growth/branches, occasionally plants, cultivates, and irrigates trees. This positions also requires driving a dump truck, and other automotive equipment, and ensuring the maintenance of climbing and tree trimming tools such that they are in good working order to perform assigned duties. The Tree Trimmer II is also responsible for providing lead work direction and training to students, grounds workers, or individuals in other grounds classifications engaged in routine tree trimming work.
Responsibilities
Tree Appearance:
- Maintains and trims trees of various heights to promote their health and appearance when such work requires the use of special climbing equipment such as ropes, climbing spikes, safety belts, and supplemental rigging and aerial personnel lifts or aerial ladders.
Tree Cultivation:
- Tops and reshapes trees; trims or removes dead, diseased, or unsightly growth and roots.
- Lowers cut branches by slings or lines, cables and bolts trees to cross-support weak limbs; fells and removes sections of trees or entire trees.
- Fells and removes branches, sections of trees or entire tree from or around lights and power lines. Applies treatment to trees having diseased or unhealthy conditions.
Tools/Equipment:
- Maintains climbing and tree trimming tools in good working order.
- Drives dump truck and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties.
- Uses power saws, handsaws, wenches, grinders, and sharpening tools as necessary.
- Safely lowers cut branches using slings or lines, cables and bolts trees to cross-support weak limbs.
Tree Care/Evaluation:
- Applies treatment to trees having diseased or unhealthy conditions, occasionally plants, cultivates, and irrigates trees.
- Evaluates tree condition; follows the campus landscape master plan.
- Provides feedback to leadership with recommendations and tree conditions.
Lead/Training:
- Provides lead work direction and training to students, grounds workers, or individuals in other grounds classifications engaged in routine tree trimming work.
- Stays abreast with new industry techniques and practices.
- Attends all scheduled trainings.
Other Duties as Required:
- May on occasion, perform the duties of a Grounds worker when required.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in trimming, shaping, cultivating, and caring for trees.
- Working knowledge of necessary rigging and various knots used in tree trimming work.
- General knowledge of different species of trees and their growing characteristics as related to pruning and shaping methods.
Abilities:
- Ability to trim trees according to accepted practices.
- Perform or quickly learn to perform necessary rigging and tying of various knots used in climbing and use climbing spikes and saddles.
- Work from hydraulic aerial lifts or from aerial ladders and work at considerable heights above the grounds.
- Perform work which requires physical strength and agility.
- Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow oral and written directions.
Experience:
- Two years of general experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in tree trimming and tree maintenance work which has provided a working knowledge of aerial equipment and safety practices and the necessary skills for climbing and high altitude tree trimming.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
- Five (5) years in the use of special tree climbing tools, equipment and lift vehicles.
Physical Conditions
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work from hydraulic or aerial lifts, aerial ladders and work at considerable heights above the grounds.
- Spends a substantial portion of time in the maintenance and trimming of trees of a height, which involves a higher personal safety risk and/or requires the use of special climbing equipment and to a lesser extent hydraulic aerial lifts or aerial ladders.
License/Certification
- Valid California Driver's License
Condition(s) of Employment
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
