Job description
The Treatment Operations Supervisor is one of three levels of the wastewater operations supervisor series. The Treatment Operations Supervisor is distinguished from the Treatment Control Supervisor by its responsibility for serving in the capacity of a front-line supervisor in the treatment of wastewater.
Incumbents are responsible for serving in the capacity of a front-line supervisor in the treatment of wastewater.
- Supervises and evaluates employees which include: giving input on hiring and promoting Operator/Maintainers; assists in personnel matters; assigns work; provides training and development to employees; and conducts employee evaluations;
- Oversees the treatment of wastewater which includes: implementing approved programs; analyzing and troubleshooting treatment processes; starting-up and shutting-down equipment;
- Ensures safe work practices are followed which includes overseeing operation activities, equipment, and procedures to ensure proper function according to law;
- Generates reports and ensures appropriate record keeping by tracking data, keeping records and preparing daily and monthly reports on plant activities;
- Provides emergency response for sanitary or on-site storm sewer problems which includes maintaining inventory of spill cleanup supplies, using maps to identify source of spill, and determining additional resources required;
- Advises plant personnel regarding equipment operating status and availability which includes approving and prioritizing requested work orders and reporting dysfunctional equipment to Maintenance or Process Control;
- Monitors and provides mentoring to Operator/Maintainers including: assigning tasks; providing information and resources; and, providing training to plant personnel in use of computer applications and on automated processes;
- Monitors and controls wastewater plant process to include: checking level of automation; adjusting process control through controller parameters and sequence operation; and, providing advice on achieving optimum plant performance;
- Works on special projects.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

- Industrial processes and actual and potential impact on the wastewater plant;

- Supervising and evaluating personnel;

- Writing reports and performing technical writing;

- Preparing and making presentations to groups;
- Implementing federal, state, and local regulations;
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):
- State of Michigan Class B Wastewater Treatment Operator license required and; must be obtained within 3 years of hire, if entering position without a Class B license;
- Associate Degree in Business, Mathematics, Engineering, Chemistry, or field related to area of assignment required;
- Bachelor of Science degree in a science-related field preferred;
- Four years of related operational experience, one of which is progressively responsible supervisory experience;
- Or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
