Who we are

As a 100% employee-owned company, at SCJ we embrace serving not only our clients but also each other. The work we do at SCJ doesn’t lend itself to narrowly defined job descriptions. Our transportation planning work is varied, and we frequently delve into unfamiliar terrain with new opportunities and challenges. Most of our work is tailored to the individual needs of our clients and their communities; it often entails inquiry and exploration to identify optimal strategies, recommendations, and outcomes.

  • Managing and mentoring transportation planning staff. You’ll oversee establishing and managing project objectives, scopes, budgets, work plans, and performance expectations. You’ll have the responsibility and resources to identify needs and make assignments.
  • Leading business development. You will look for new work opportunities with existing clients; work to establish new clients; and pursue potential new business, resources, competitive situations, or technology/regulatory factors that enhance SCJ’s overall market competitiveness.
  • Initiating and maintaining client relationships. Your role will include business development and all things from that point forward that foster client loyalty.
  • Developing and implementing communication plans and stakeholder processes to support planning efforts. Effective verbal and written communications will be an integral part of your work.

  • Providing QA/QC and peer review. Your expertise and attention to detail will ensure deliverables are accurate, thorough, and meet expectations.
  • Writing grants and facilitating project evolution and transition from planning to engineering and design.
  • Having fun, being kind, inspiring others.

What you bring

  • A passion for transportation planning and the role transportation plays in community building.
  • The ability to produce effective technical reports as well as reader-friendly plans and policies.
  • A disciplined approach and follow-through with work plans, budgets and delivery schedules, project and people management, documentation, communications, and project records.
  • Characteristics that make you a sought-after and reliable team member, including a positive, forward-looking attitude, empathy, and collegiality.
  • Good judgment and a strong, positive reputation for successful project delivery and uncompromising client services.
  • Curiosity and comfort with unfamiliar terrain, and ease using inquiry and exploration to identify optimal strategies, recommendations, and outcomes.
  • Professional and personal characteristics that help you thrive equally working independently or as part of a team.
  • Confidence and skill in public speaking to and with a wide variety of audiences and communities.
  • Familiarity with state and federal transportation policy and a working knowledge of local or regional (MPO/RTPO) planning arenas.
