By joining the Department of Aviation you will have the opportunity to be authorized and assigned to plan and perform complex professional engineering work in the planning , design, construction and maintenance of highways, structures, or transportation facilities. This position will have the unique ability to practice in those fields utilizing unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Reviews and approves engineering documents as a licensed Professional engineer.

Holders of the Transportation Engineer Specialist will complete tasks such as:
- Plan and perform complex engineering work utilizing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for planning, surveying, design, and construction.
- Perform engineering work in the office analyzing data collected from UAS for planning, surveying, design and construction. Develop plans, specifications & procedures for agency & contracted UAS projects & services.
- Serve as liaison for the Kentucky Department of Aviation UAS program, providing support and guidance internal and external agencies. Assist counties in the deployment of UAS for disaster recovery and other operations.
- Create and lead a multi-agency UAS working group (engineers and surveyors as well as other individuals involved in the operation of UAS); provide engineering and technical support, facilitate information exchange between agencies using UAS; and assist agencies in the selection of airframes, motors, and related data processing software.
- Project cost estimates and schedules for complex aviation related projects.
- Intergovernmental relationships, state and local.
- Engineering and technical UAS support for a broad range of agencies.
- Knowledge of UAS aircraft, airframes, motors, and data processing software.
- Aviation engineering experience.
- Transportation knowledge.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: See Special Requirements.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate work in engineering beyond a master's degree will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors OR must be licensed in another state with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license from the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors within the employee's initial six month probationary period. Engineering decisions recommended by individuals without a Kentucky Professional Engineering License must be approved by a KY LPE under KRS 322 until licensure is obtained. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
