Position Summary:
Under the supervision of Assisted Living Director, provide administrative and supervisory oversight of staff assigned to the direct care service functions of Andahwod Continuing Care Community & Elder Services. Serve as primary monitor of the health status of residents. Supervise and oversee all nursing care. Provide assessment of resident care needs, prevention, administration, and yearly immunizations. All Andahwod staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Assisted Living Director in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating and directing the ongoing functions of the Resident Care aspects of the Assisted Living Program.
- Develop, maintain and periodically update written position descriptions of direct care staff in accordance with pertinent state and federal laws and regulations and organizational policies.
- Develop, implement, maintain and update an ongoing quality assurance program for direct care staff.
- Monitor and ensure that direct care staff meets all relevant regulatory requirements, professional standards of practice, and program policies and procedures.
- Assure staff meets the requirements of their position descriptions, the quality standards and performance expectations of the Assisted Living Program.
- Provide written and oral reports and recommendations to the Director as necessary or required concerning the provision of assisted living services to residents and operation of the resident care area.
- Participate in performance-related goal setting to meet and achieve program goals and objectives.
- Provide supervision to assigned staff including hiring, orientation, technical supervision, coaching, training, performance evaluation and corrective action. Supervise the continuing education of existing staff.
- Perform administrative duties such as scheduling staff for proper coverage in all support service areas and manage staffing levels to comply with budgetary limits.
- Develop annual budget for Resident Care. Monitor monthly financial statements. Submit annual and quarterly budget reports, statistical data and narrative for review to the Assisted Living Director and the Accounting Department.
- Meet with potential residents, their families, legal representatives, and/or health care providers to assess their suitability for residency.
- Assist residents through the admission process in coordination with other pertinent staff.
- Contact and update primary care provider regarding residents.
- Perform review of charting and medication administration.
- Conduct monthly care coordinator meeting with guardians.
- Maintain familiarity with the assisted living needs status and general health status of all residents, including periodic (scheduled) reassessment of resident needs.
- Plan, direct, and monitor the medication management and treatment functions necessary to provide appropriate assistance to residents and to assure security of pharmaceuticals.
- Plan, direct, and monitor an individualized care plan for each required resident. Ensure direct care staff compliance with each resident’s care plan.
- Review and advise staff and residents on dietary and nutritional guidelines as it pertains to resident care needs.
- Monitor and ensure the enforcement of established protocol and standard operating procedures applicable to health care and the safety of residents and staff.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing health status forms, reports, evaluations, resident assessments, and other reporting functions as directed.
- Utilize various software programs for tracking resident care, monitoring budgets, and reporting staff time.
- Respond to assistance and /or emergency calls and provide direct nursing care as necessary to meet the needs of residents. Carry out direct care activities legally performed by an RN as required.
- Share on call responsibilities as necessary.
- Maintain timely and effective communication with supervisor, peers and staff.
- Encourage and participate in the development of cooperative working relationships within the Assisted Living Program, the Elder Services Program, other Tribal Operations departments and the community.
- Ensure staff knowledge of and compliance with residents’ rights guidelines.
- Receive, document and respond to complaints and concerns expressed by residents and/or staff; report all such communications and responses to the Director in a timely fashion.
- Observe and enforce established policies dealing with medication management, safety, sanitation, fire prevention, lifting/transferring techniques, universal precautions for dealing with bio-hazards, and smoking regulations.
- Participate in the development and periodic revision of the program’s operating policies and procedures relating to the assisted living functions of the assisted living facility.
- Monitor inventory to ensure all equipment and supplies are readily available, used and maintained in a safe and efficient manner.
- Adhere to resident confidentiality and comply with department policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
- Direct contact with residents, families, and guests.
- Contact is other health professionals, staff, Elder Service Program, and community resources to exchange information, for collaboration and consultation.
- Contact with health care providers, contractors, vendors, representatives from professional organizations, caregivers, representatives of other Tribal Operations departments providing services to residents, in order to coordinate, advise on, or resolve problems with such services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and nursing techniques and practices.
- Knowledge of OSHA guidelines for blood borne pathogens.
- Knowledge of patient positioning and procedures for various examinations.
- Knowledge of commonly used drugs and pharmacology terminology.
- Knowledge of office functions, procedures, and policies.
- Knowledge of sterilization procedures.
- Skill in operating various word-processing and database software programs.
- Skill in preparing, reviewing and analyzing operational and financial reports.
- Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.

Physical Demands:
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
- Required to stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Assisted Living Facility.
- Exposure to bodily fluids such as blood and saliva and/or the potential for needle sticks and/or skin puncture.
- Potential contact with chemicals and/or cleaning reagents utilized within the facility.
- Exposure to unpleasant odors, radiation, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous material and infectious disease.
- Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
Job Requirements
- Registered Nurse.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
- Three years long term care experience. One year in a supervisory capacity.
- Experience and knowledge of services to assisted living services, adult foster care services and homes for the elderly.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with residents and all members of the health care team.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- State of Michigan Registered Nurse License.
- Must be able to obtain BLS Certification within probationary period.
- Must be able to obtain HIPAA certification within five business days from date of hire.
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
