Job description
St. Louis Public Library’s Central Branch is seeking a Teen Specialist with experience working with teens to join our Library team. The Library values the array of talents and perspectives that a diverse workforce brings and how this positively impacts our services and customer base.
Our ideal candidate has a passion for engaging youth and serving the St. Louis community, helping us advance our primary mission as a forward thinking and customer-centered public library providing vital services to the people of St. Louis. This position is responsible for developing and implementing engaging teen programs that respond to community needs, representing the Library through outreach, and ensuring all young people have a positive experience at the Library. In this position, we are looking for someone who thrives in a high-energy environment and wants to create a real impact in young peoples’ lives.
Central Library has a unique space just for teens- with gaming consoles, teen computers, comfortable seating, and a programming space. A successful Teen Specialist at Central will work well as part of a team, be able to juggle multiple projects and priorities, and will be highly committed to equitable services to a diverse population of library customers.
In this role you will:
-
Foster a Library environment where teens, children, and caregivers who visit the Library feel welcome, have a positive experience, and find resources that meet their needs. Ensure that customers are following library policies and help contribute to a safe environment.
-
Collaborate with the Central Youth Services team to develop and implement engaging programs for youth, especially teens, including arts programs, STEM programs, video gaming, and more. Actively work with the CYS team and across the system to ensure St. Louis Public Library is meeting the needs of youth in our community.
-
Implement and shape key Library initiatives that impact teens and youth, including our Summer Challenge reading program, partnership with Operation Food Search to provide free meals to kids and teens, and supporting teen volunteers and interns.
-
Provide circulation assistance, including checkouts and card applications, and assist customers utilizing Library equipment.
-
Establish and maintain working relations with schools and other community organizations to promote library services to students, teachers and parents. Represent the Library at outreach events in the community.
You will need to be:
-
Friendly, outgoing, and excited to work with teens.
-
Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work with competing tasks and priorities.
-
Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
Committed to serving St. Louis Public Library’s diverse customer base and developing your own cultural awareness.
You will need to have:
-
One to two years of experience working with youth in a professional setting, or a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Education, or related field.
-
Strong communication, writing, and speaking skills
-
Strong technical skills, comfort with operating video game systems, and an understanding of how technology can be incorporated into learning opportunities
You will earn:

Competitive salary range starting at $35,385
-

-
Paid vacation, holidays, and sick days
-
Pension plan through the Employees Retirement System of the City of St. Louis
