BCI has an opening for (1) full-time Systems (safety) Engineer in direct support of the US Coast Guard Combat System Safety program who will become part of the Operations Engineering group. This group provides specific, tailored, Warfare System and System Safety Engineering support to several Coast Guard, Naval Sea Systems Command, Joint, and Naval Air Systems engineering, program acquisition and fleet support activities. The successful candidate must be an energetic self-starter, able to articulate complex technical issues in a clear, concise, understandable manner in verbal and written formats, work productively independently and in team environments, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks in parallel.

Experience Required: This position requires 10+ years' general combat systems engineering experience with at least five (5) years' experience in Systems Safety. This experience may have been attained while active duty as senior enlisted or Limited Duty Officer in Combat Systems or Operations related to Air Defense or Self Defense. The optimal candidate must possess Aegis experience; additional experience with USCG Combat System, SSDS, and/or Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) systems engineering and systems safety engineering experience is a plus. Some formal education in systems engineering or software engineering that emphasizes open architectures is also preferred. A formal degree supporting systems engineering, software engineering or significant analysis experience would be a plus. Two (2) years' experience with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
Description of Duties: Full-time leading member of the US Coast Guard Combat Systems Safety team with responsibilities tailored to provide technical and engineering support for the systems and software engineering team that executes analysis and assessment of combat systems level safety risks associated with design development and delivery. This team does highly challenging and rewarding work at the Element and Combat System level with integrated weapons, communications and operations elements to understand the risks and hazards associated with the employment of these systems in an operational setting.
This includes:
- Developing and maintaining currency and understanding of Coast Guard combat and weapon systems being employed in the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Polar Security Cutter (PSC) WMSP Class ship and future designs;
- Understanding relevant safety issues;
- Participating in engineering and safety reviews;
- Evaluating and editing risk assessment studies and analyses;
- Preparing reports and briefs, and presenting such materials to formal boards including WSESRB;
- Analyzing System Safety Plans, Safety Management Plans, assessment of hardware and software changes/issues affecting systems safety; and
- Analyzing safety test documentation/plans.
Travel is required up to 5-10% as part of assigned tasking. There will be trips to the Washington, DC area and Moorestown, NJ, Coast Guard Base Portsmouth, Portsmouth, VA, Bollinger Shipyard, Pascagoula MS, Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Panama City FL.
