Position Details:

Surgery Supervisor

Full-time, Permanent, Salary, Benefited position

On-call required & weekends.

Sign on bonus available!

Position Summary:

Surgical Nurse Supervisor who participates in all aspects of the hospital surgical department and regularly provides patient care.

Job Duties:

  • Coordinates assignments of staff, instrument set-ups and lay-out of tables for various operations.
  • Anticipates surgeons’ requirements and ensures supply availability.
  • Prepares general procedures and lists requirements of each operating surgeon for each type of operation performed.
  • Standardizes packs and draping of patients for each operation.
  • Informs staff of new procedures, special instruments or sutures required for scheduled operations.
  • Regularly provides coaching and leadership with clinical staff.
  • Coordinates with Clinical Nurse Educator to ensure staff orientation and identify ongoing in-service programs following evidence-based practice in the delivery of quality patient care.
  • Demonstrates clinical proficiency, including providing efficient aid to surgeons and ensures strict observance of aseptic techniques.
  • Acquaints personnel with proper methods and techniques before participating in operative procedures.
  • Ensures that operating room and delivery room suites are kept meticulously clean.
  • Cooperates with purchasing department in selection of new instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Participates in formulating administrative and personnel policies pertaining to surgical room staff and procedures.
  • Directs maintenance of required records and reports, including work performance.
  • Directs the central supply area in requisition, storing, preparing, and issuing packs, trays and equipment to doctors and the entire hospital
  • Supervises professional and non-professional nursing personnel assigned to Operating Room, Recovery Room and Central Sterile ensuring safe and appropriate patient care.
  • Coordinates with Surgical Services Nurse Manager to meet any departmental nursing service’s needs.
  • Cooperates with all department heads to coordinate continuity of care.
  • As needed, teaches courses in operating room techniques for CCH staff.
  • Effective patient teaching, pre and post operatively.
  • Ability to work with vendors to keep good quality, up to date supplies available at reasonable prices.
  • Knowledge of prior-authorization requirements and ability to communicate with physicians, patients and 3rd party regarding these.
  • Resource person for Infection Control Committee
  • May perform other duties as necessary.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education/Licensure/Certification — Mandatory:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current registered nurse licensure in state of employment
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Cardiovascular Life Support (BLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (within 6 months of hire)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (within 6 months of hire)

Experience:

Required:

  • One year varied perioperative nursing services
  • Basic computer skills (eg, Microsoft® Word)

Preferred:

  • Two years of specialty or team leader experience
  • Advanced computer skills (eg, Microsoft® PowerPoint, Excel)
