Operational for 22 years, HLCR is a true no-kill shelter on 15 acres in the Marble Falls, Texas area.
We're the shelter others call to take animals who are ill or injured and about to be euthanized. We understand these dogs are valuable and just need a chance. We save and rehab these dogs, then find them happy, safe homes. Dogs with mange, heart worm, injuries, diseases, are pregnant, have dental problems or behavior issues all get a second chance with us. We provide an exceptional collection of support facilities for our rescued dogs, including indoor kennels, large outdoor pens, and extensive walking trails where dogs interact daily with our staff and volunteers.
All of our dogs leave HLCR being:
- fully vaccinated including Rabies
- spayed/neutered
- microchipped
- treated for heart worm or on heart worm prevention
- on flea/tick prevention
- eating nutritious food and taking supplements if needed
- healthy, socialized and ready for their new family and home.
Shelter Technician
This is a part-time position. A minimum of 3 days per week including some weekends.

Position Summary
The Shelter Technician’s primary duties involve the care of the dogs and the maintenance of our shelter facilities. The Shelter Technician interacts daily with dogs to socialize, walk, bathe, harness and feed them; maintains the general cleanliness of the facility, indoor runs and outdoor pens daily; and cleans and disinfects areas occupied or used by the dogs on a daily basis.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Feeds and waters dogs (or supervises volunteers to perform this task). Bathes and grooms dogs as needed. Observes dogs to detect injuries and or illness. Notifies the Executive Director of any unusual situations with the dogs. In emergency situations, uses sound judgment in contacting shelter approved veterinarians.
- Administers medications and treatment prescribed by veterinarians and appropriately documents same on the dog’s medical log.
- Assists with intake of new dogs, i.e., quarantine set up, ID tags, etc. Observes all quarantine guidelines to protect the health and well-being of new dogs and the general population. May accompany the Executive Director to other shelters or animal control facilities to assist with assessment and intake.
- Exercises dogs, i.e., daily walking (with assistance from volunteers) or in their pens. Ensures each dog enjoys outdoor time and proper socialization, weather and dog health permitting.
- Ensures that proper identification, handling instructions, any restrictions are clearly displayed on each dog’s kennel.
- Supervises dog care volunteers during each shift to ensure the dogs are exercised and cared for correctly and that dogs are leashed or harnessed safely and correctly. Follows all safety guidelines and shelter procedures and ensures volunteers do the same while working with the dogs.
- Interacts with dogs to gain individual knowledge of each dog to give input to management as well as to be able to discuss each dog with volunteers and potential adopters. Treats all dogs humanely, properly and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance. Promotes a humane and caring attitude with volunteers and visitors toward each dog. Assists with dog behavior training as directed.
- Assists with potential adopter meetings to introduce dogs and safely facilitate meetings with family dogs. May be asked to handle adoptions, i.e., complete paperwork and photo.
- Trains volunteers, runs errands to veterinary offices and other suppliers, and attends/assists with community service or adoption events, as assigned.
- Performs other duties related to shelter operations and dog care, as assigned.
Working Conditions
- Office and dog shelter environment.
- Exposure to high noise levels and zoonotic diseases.
- Exposure to all weather conditions when working at the shelter and at outdoor events.
- Frequent use of computer and telephone.
- Able to bend, lift dogs, crates, food and other large items with ease.
- Willing to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
- As requested, drives shelter’s or own vehicle to transport dogs
Skills, Abilities and Knowledge
- Professional dog handling experience in preferred but are willing to train the right person.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of team members, volunteers and donors.
- Able to learn basic medical care for dogs including minor wound care and giving medications.
- Ability to read and comprehend directions, labels and description/instructions, especially regarding food and medical treatment.
- Ability to successfully advocate the HLCR brand and mission to volunteers, donors and sponsors, surrendering families, adoptive families, and the public at large, both inside the shelter and at fundraising and adoption events throughout our community.
- Must hold a valid Texas Driver’s License and have an insurable driving record.
- Ability to work on own initiative and meet deadlines.
