The Product Training Department for Volvo Penta Region Americas (VPA)—headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia—is responsible for competence development for our dealers and partners within the industrial and marine segments.

We are looking for a Senior Training instructor to join our amazing team here in Chesapeake, Virginia!

What is the Job?
In this role, you will be responsible for transferring product knowledge to Volvo Penta partners, dealers, OEMs, trainers and internal personnel regarding design and function, diagnostics and repair of all industrial and marine engines, electric and hybrid drive systems, transmissions and control systems via in-person and virtual events. It is also your responsibility to develop learning materials and that all training activities are conducted in a safe, professional, courteous and positive way. Some of your core responsibilities will include:
  • Providing authorized dealers, partners and trainers with competence development on products and services for the industrial and marine product including engines, transmissions, electronic control systems and hybrid drive systems
  • Delivering instructor-led training at local and remote locations both domestic and international
  • Developing and implementing curriculums to work in conjunction with equipment and online learning materials
  • Developing and maintaining a high level of technical product knowledge and ensuring product information is being updated within the curriculums accordingly
  • Providing input, supporting and developing the Train-the-Trainer (TtT) program
  • Preparing school locations for scheduled training activities as well as logistics to secure training equipment inventory
  • Providing critical insight and contributions to the product training team to execute plans and to achieve set targets
  • Collaborating with colleagues within the company and the training community on a regular basis
  • Evaluating student feedback and implementing improvement opportunities

Do you like to develop competence in people and their organizations?
To be successful in this role, we need someone who has experience with instructing classes (in-person and virtual), product troubleshooting, as well as repair of complex power and drive systems including electric, hybrid, and combustion engines. We would like for you to possess both teaching skills and technical background with a continuous improvement mindset, in addition to improving efficiency and results within the team.

Experience with electric powertrain and hybrid technologies within a related industry is preferred. Having in-depth knowledge of retail marine leisure, marine commercial, and/or industrial service trade practices and activities via direct experience or extensive dealer interaction will give you an edge, as will having knowledge of telematics related to connectivity, remote diagnostics, etc.

The Basics
As with all our positions here in Volvo Penta, you will need experience with MS Power Point, Excel, Word and Outlook as well as familiarity with diagnostic programs for troubleshooting.

As you will be directly responsible for relaying complex technical concepts and instructions when instructing, excellent communication skills are necessary as is the need for fluency in speaking and writing English in order to communicate successfully with internal and external stakeholders at different levels of the organization.

Education and Experience
This position requires:
  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 4 years’ combined experience with engine and power systems including electric powertrain and hybrid technologies
  • Strong mechanical expertise in troubleshooting, repair, overhaul and installation of marine, industrial, or related products
  • 5 years technical instructor experience, curriculum design a plus
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred
  • Frequent travel up to 60% depending on season.
