Job Description


General Summary

Under limited supervision, the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) responsible for the assessment of general care patients including the development, evaluation and modification of the plan of care. The RRT interprets and performs simple patient care procedures specific to their area of expertise in accordance with medical staff approved protocols, physician orders and departmental policies and procedures and American Association of Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines. The RRT is a resource to hospital and departmental staff regarding alternative methodologies/procedures in solving problems directed to the Respiratory Care Department. Registered Respiratory therapists are members of the Care Team and Support Team and have accountability to function as a team to accomplish patient outcomes identified in the pathway/plan of care. Periodic supervision is exercised over other Respiratory Therapists, Technicians and students as assigned to “Senior Therapist” responsibilities.


The Registered Respiratory Therapist is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for care given to a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RRT provides care to those patients via therapeutic use of self, the environment/technology, and other health care team members, according to established standards. Patients served include all age groups (Infant through Adult-Geriatric).

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Manager of Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Rehabilitation or his/her designee. Job requires limited level of supervision.


Qualifications


Licensed by the state of Maryland as a Certified Respiratory Care Practitioner and Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board of Respiratory Care or registry eligible; must obtain registry one year from the date of hire or transfer into the position . Current CPR card. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows or successful completion of a hospital training program required.


Working Conditions

Works inside a clean, well-lighted environment. May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. May be physically or verbally abused by patients. Expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices.


Physical Requirements (per eight hour shift)

Standing, sitting, ascending/descending stairs and walking is required 0 - 8 hours per shift. Involved heavy lifting, carrying, push on rollers up to 200 lbs. and pulling in excess of 100 lbs. 0 - 3 hours per shift. Manual dexterity for operating equipment which includes reaching for, fingering, grasping and handling equipment/supplies 0 - 5 hours per shift. Requires hearing/listening to differentiate sounds 0 - 5 hours per shift. Visual acuity is necessary to read labels, charts, and documents and use various instruments 0 - 8 hours per shift.
