About the Department

The Chicago Center for HIV Elimination (CCHE), is situated within the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago Medicine. CCHE aims to eliminate all new HIV transmission events by 2041.

The University of Chicago's position on the South Side makes it uniquely situated to test, treat, and prevent new HIV infections in a highly affected population. The South Side communities and majority Black suburbs connected to them to the South represents the largest contiguous Black population in the United States. By using our integrated HIV transmission elimination approaches, we are beginning to make new infections in these communities less frequent.

Job Summary

The Research Technician will assist the PI with day-to-day operations of funded projects that involve working with LGB (lesbian, gay and bisexual) and TGNC (transgender and gender non-conforming) and criminal legal involved (CLI) individuals.

The Research Technician will support research-related toxicology screening (including cannabis, methamphetamine and opioids), STI, and HIV testing including phlebotomy. Proper documentation must be completed for all testing encounters; this includes consent for testing, releases of information, screening for 'risk factors,' HIV pre- and post-test counseling.

A major component of this position will be collecting and processing human biospecimen samples manually or on automated equipment. Specifically, the position will involve extraction of plasma, DNA and RNA from biospecimens, quantitation and quality analysis of extracted specimens, aliquoting, and storage of biospecimens. Use of a computer-based specimen inventory and tracking system to detail receipt, processing, aliquoting, storage and distribution of all specimens will be required. The Research Technician will perform biospecimen processing and testing in a specialized laboratory area using standard operating procedures and proper safety procedures. The Research Technician will be responsible for specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, storage, and shipping.

The Research Technician will work directly with the study team with some oversight from the Research Manager and Lab Manager. The candidate will report to the Research Manager. Funded projects include HIV care, PrEP care, substance use and COVID-19.
Responsibilities
  • Performs biospecimen processing and testing in a specialized laboratory area using standard operating procedures and proper safety procedures.
  • Responsible for specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, shipping, and storage.
  • Processes research specimens safely and accurately, assuring positive patient identification.
  • Maintains an efficient, well-organized laboratory, manages supplies, maintains quality control programs, and assists with development of processing instructions.
  • Ensures accurate storage for all specimen types.
  • Supports the maintenance of all protocols and updates to protocols.
  • Delivers assessments and study interventions.
  • Supports data entry.
  • Assist with the development of study implementation protocols.
  • Offering referrals to service programming when appropriate.
  • Ability to travel to various community venues across the Chicago metropolitan area.
  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

  • Bachelor's degree.

Experience:
  • Experience collecting and processing human biospecimen samples.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment utilizing human biologic specimens with knowledge of aseptic techniques.
  • Research experience focused in an academic, or equivalent environment.
