Job Duties

SWVMHI in Marion, VA (Smyth County) is recruiting for multiple 12-hour PM Shift, Entry-Level Registered Nurse I positions to join its talented and dedicated Nursing Service Team on Admissions Unit C/D.

Position Hours: 6:30 p.m.- 7:00 a.m. Working at Least Every Other Weekend

Shift Differentials and Weekend/Holiday Supplements Available

RN Is assist people in recovery from mental illness by:
  • Using the Nursing Process to implement and evaluate nursing care delivery as reflected on
the Nursing Care Plan part of the individual’s Interdisciplinary Treatment Plan
  • Creating healthy interpersonal interactions with individuals on adult acute admission units,
geriatric unit, and extended rehabilitation service unit
  • Maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment for forensic and
civilly committed individuals who have a primary diagnosis of a mental illness
  • Administering medications, providing treatments, assisting with individual/family activities and education, and other direct care services
  • Being part of an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental team to provide, observe,
communicate, document, and encourage interventions, treatments, and behaviors that
promote holistic well-being
  • Demonstrating professional leadership as a Primary Nurse, Charge Nurse, Medication Nurse,
and/or Treatment Nurse
  • Overseeing assignments and performance of Psychiatric Care Technicians and float staff
during the shift

KSAs and or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:
  • New graduate from an accredited school of Nursing and or possesses basic knowledge of
psychiatric nursing principles
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional registered nursing to provide care
appropriate to adult and geriatric populations, including medication management,
medical/physical treatments, wound prevention, and falls prevention
  • Demonstrated ability to practice infection control measures and appropriately apply standards in daily activities
  • Demonstrated ability to safely and efficiently administer medications to a group of diverse
persons, assess effectiveness, and provide teaching to individuals/family/groups with follow
up documentation in the Electronic Health Record
  • Demonstrate successful interventions to manage conflict including crises and aggressive
behavior, work effectively in a constantly changing environment, and able to tolerate
emotional stress
  • Ability to lead subordinate staff and inspire motivation in others
  • Demonstrated ability to use assertiveness skills and maintain composure
  • Ability to maintain concentration with multiple interruptions and appropriately prioritize needs
  • Demonstrate oral, written, telephone, and electronic skills to adequately communicate with
others including individuals served, CSBs, family, and other customers; complete electronic
health record documentation, and “hand-off” information satisfactorily to other caregivers at all
levels in the facility
  • Vision and hearing adequate to recognize and respond to situations and ensure safety of
people at facility
  • Physical requirements necessary: repetitious walking and/or standing; bending, lifting and
reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport and/or escort individuals served
and to perform or assist them in activities of daily living
  • Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing
acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement
  • Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency
  • Computer skills needed including use of electronic health record

Minimum Qualifications

1. Require License or eligibility to practice as Registered Nurse by the Virginia State Board of
Nursing in the State of Virginia
2. Require graduation from an accredited school of registered nursing.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience in a psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long-term care or correction setting is preferred.
