Exciting opportunities! The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Drinking Water and Groundwater Program has four (4) Public Water Supply Engineer openings. We encourage all levels to apply (from entry through advanced). Selected candidates will be brought in at a level relative to their experience. We welcome applications from students graduating this year.

The open positions are located at:

  • Fitchburg office in the Madison area (This position may be stationed in the Fitchburg, Dodgeville, Janesville, Horicon Offices based on office availability and candidate preference)
  • Green Bay
  • Baldwin (This position may be stationed in the Baldwin or Eau Claire Offices based on office availability and candidate preference)
  • Wisconsin Rapids (This is a "project" position that comes with full benefits but has a term limit ending Sept. 30, 2026. The position may involve assignments and travel to various locations throughout the state.)

Position Summary


These positions are responsible for implementing the Safe Drinking Water Act and State Drinking Water regulatory authority for municipalities in assigned counties. Duties may include general compliance and technical assistance, public health and resource protection, enforcement, data management, and so on. These positions are assigned to a DNR region: South-Central Region (Fitchburg), Northeast Region (Green Bay), or the West Central Region (Baldwin and Wisconsin Rapids). Travel is required throughout the assigned area and sometimes statewide.

Successful candidates will be able to work independently and with others using communication and technical skills in service to the public and with the assigned Public Water Systems. You’ll work with departmental teams, the public, assigned public water systems, local officials, other state agencies, and the federal government to accomplish work plan goals.

Salary Information


Starting pay is $27 - $41.78 per hour ($56,160 - $86,902.40 annually).

Pay on appointment for current or former state employees is based on the State Compensation Plan.

These positions are in Pay Schedule/Range 14-14 or 14-13.

In addition, there is $2,080/year added to your base salary for holding a Professional Engineer (PE) license, whether it is held presently or acquired in the future. A PE is not a requirement for this position.

These positions are responsible for the public water supply program in the designated region of Wisconsin, or possible other parts of the state. Significant travel is required throughout the assigned area with some region-wide and statewide travel required for meetings or other.

Employment will require the selected candidate to pass a background check. DNR does not sponsor work visas, thus, in compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

All state employees must report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not and provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.

Qualifications


To be minimally qualified applicants must meet (and provide appropriate documentation of) at least one of the below requirements during the application process:

  • Have graduated from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field such as civil or environmental engineering, chemical, biological systems, geological, electrical, mechanical, and so on.
  • Have equivalent professional training and practical experience so as to be deemed a professional engineer as defined in Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.01, Wis. Stats. and also deemed to be qualified to engage in professional engineering practice as determined by the Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.03, or 443.04, or 443.05, Wis. Stats.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer as determined by the Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.04, Wis. Stats.
  • A specific record, issued by the professional engineering section of the Department of Safety and Professional Services, showing 4 years or more of experience in engineering work of a character satisfactory to the professional engineering section and satisfactory completion of the fundamentals of engineering exam.
