FULL-TIME PUBLIC DEFENDER ATTORNEY, GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA

The Greene County Public Defender Board, Bloomfield, Indiana, seeks to hire a full-time Public Defender Attorney for Greene County, Indiana. Incumbent will be responsible for providing representation to indigent defendants accused of crimes by the State of Indiana; to indigent defendants accused of violating probation; to children accused of criminal activity in juvenile delinquency matters; juvenile status offense representation; representation of those threatened with contempt sanctions for failure to pay court-ordered child support; representation of indigent parents and children in Child in Need of Services and Termination of Parental Rights matters, all subject to such case load limitations as may be imposed from time to time by the Indiana Public Defender Commission. Office hours for the office of the Greene County Public Defender are 8:00 AM-4:00 PM Monday through Friday, but the position itself requires regularly working extended hours, evenings, and weekends.

The successful applicant will demonstrate, among other traits, a high level of dedication to the defense of indigent clients and a commitment to public defense and the principles underlying effective assistance of counsel.

Preliminary Qualifications:

All applicants shall have a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in the State of Indiana, with ongoing completion of all licensing requirements. The applicant shall possess a valid Indiana driver’s license and demonstrated good driving record.

Applicants shall possess a passion for indigent defense and have an interest in pursuing a career as a public defender. Two years of prior criminal law experience is preferred but not mandatory. An applicant should be able to demonstrate the ability to carry a full-time public defender caseload and will demonstrate the ability to handle multiple priorities and a large volume of work. Applicants must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills with emphasis on strong interpersonal communications. Furthermore, applicants should be able to work well unsupervised as well as in a team environment.

Salary:

The salary amount for 2023 is $81,573.00, pro-rated and paid in accordance with the 2023 Greene County Salary Ordinance, which includes an option for benefits.
