Position Focus:
The influence of industrial ecology is significant and growing. This position provides a unique opportunity for a candidate passionate to help shape and advance programs at the Center for Industrial Ecology, that may include supporting new research initiatives, developing engagement activities, organizing an annual event, and hosting visiting scholars. The Program Manager works in conjunction with the faculty and the CIE Director in developing strategic plans, overseeing programmatic development, and is responsible for the administrative management of the Center.
Principal responsibilities include: Oversees and implements the planning process for the CIE in conjunction with the faculty and CIE Director, to include tactical goals for program development, communications, and outreach and fund-raising opportunities. Works closely with faculty and learning community partners to assist in the development and growth of the program. Develops metrics to measure successes. Develops and manages the annual budgets and helps to oversee project budgets. Prepares the annual report of the Center. Plans and oversees an annual event that enhances the intellectual foundations of the Center and the IE field. Oversees and coordinates the weekly CIE Lunchtime Talks. Supports student professional development through mentorship and the creation of new opportunities and by providing guidance and support for student-led outreach and events. Trains and supervises future program staff as needed. Allocates time and resources on an ongoing basis in an effective manner. Manages the student research assistants. Oversees the Center’s website to ensure the IE website is up-to-date with current and accurate information for prospective and current students and visitors. Oversees and organizes CIE social media activities. Coordinates with various administrative offices (human resources, ITS, facilities, Dean’s Office, alumni office, development, career development). Oversees the maintenance and promotion of strong relationships with program collaborators and learning community partners. Represents the CIE at events, professional meetings and conferences at Yale. Seeks out opportunities for collaboration internal and external to Yale, including hosting visiting scholars and students. Continuously evaluates organization policies and guidelines, recommending and implementing changes as necessary. Oversees the production of outreach materials – newsletters, posters, and announcements. Writes and prepares correspondence, reports, informational and publicity materials. Manages relationships with alumni for information included on the CIE website and helps to identify field experts for external speakers.
Essential Duties
1. Oversees the advancement and growth of the program. Gives direction and leadership supporting the philosophy, mission, strategy, and annual goals and objectives. Assumes primary accountability for disseminating and publishing all program information to create public awareness and support of the program. 2. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans. 3. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program. Develops the metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. Responsible for measurements of grant success and related evaluation. 4. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications. Develops and manages the program’s operating budget. 5. Develops the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resource and administrative functions of the program, including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 6. Investigates, identifies, implements, and oversees the maintenance of systems to gather, track, and report information to support the initiatives of the program. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. 7. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifying outreach potential, and promoting philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. Contributes to the development and assists in the management of content on the program’s website and monitors all changes and additions to the editorial content. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Superior oral, written, digital, and organizational skills with well-developed ability to manage budgets. Ability to manage multiple projects flexibly under time constraints and be highly productive with limited supervision.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Strong leadership, negotiation, and management skills. Excellent interpersonal skills for effective interaction inside and outside of Yale.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, diverse, and changing environment. Team player with ability to work well with staff, faculty, and students. Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collegiality among faculty, staff, and students, and to work with a diverse team including students, faculty and other community members.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Strong computer skills and familiarity with appropriate software such as Microsoft Office. Social media familiarity – Linked-In, Facebook, Twitter.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Excellent oral and written communication skills including ability to communicate with international colleagues for whom English is not a primary language. Ability to work independently.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Background in environmental and educational fields. Program management and administration in academic or other professional settings.
