Who We Need

The Program Director, Health and Civic Education oversees and is responsible for the creation and delivery models of community informed and evidence-based curricula focused on Health and Civic Education for It’s Time Texas.

This role will lead the identification, research, and design of educational curricula to serve It’s Time Texas target audiences including SNAP eligible populations. This role will work to build evidence-based curricula, using public health frameworks, that will contribute to saving lives by reducing the instance of preventable diseases while increasing access to health for all Texans. At an individual level, this role will work to improve the health status of individuals, and at an organizational and community level create policy, systems, and environmental changes. This role includes responsibilities but is not limited to the creation and/or oversight of educational curricula for It’s Time Texas’ Healthier Texas Summit, Regional Workshops, toolkits and educational resources, School Health Improvement Plan and associated planning tools, exercise and nutrition education, telehealth coaching, social marketing campaigns, and skill building workshops.

This role will manage people, projects, performance, deliverables/outcomes and resources. This person will assist in a cross-departmental effort to strengthen and expand the Health and Civic Education pillar of It’s Time Texas programming. They will supervise team members that execute and manage day-to-day program operations and relationships. This person will play a key role in managing direct partner relationships that develop and execute our Health and Civic Education work. As a leader of our work, they are ultimately responsible for ensuring that the team achieves its goals and effectively communicates results, outputs, and outcomes to internal and external audiences. This position requires limited travel across Texas for events including the Healthier Texas Summit and Regional Workshops (up to 10% of role).

The Program Director, Health & Civic Education requires an experienced public health professional who has previous work experience with curricula development and instructional design. Preferred candidates have experience with SNAP-Ed and/or other federal nutrition programs.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Curricula Development (30%)

  • Oversee the curriculum development process for It’s Time Texas; further collaborate with staff, subject matter experts and community members to plan, design, develop, support, and evaluate new programmatic curriculum
  • Ensure all curricula is community informed, evidence-based, appropriate to drive the intended learning outcomes, meets grant and contract compliance standards and accessibility requirements
  • Assist in need assessments and research on health and civic education topics; stay abreast of current trends
  • Recommend effective and creative uses of technology to enhance instruction and create new learning opportunities.
  • Develop trainings to guide instructional design processes for staff
  • Conduct quality reviews, lead peer feedback sessions, and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and their application to enhancing face-to-face courses; Make recommendations to adopt and implement solutions as appropriate; facilitate the development of materials in multiple modalities
  • Provide support for faculty in designing and implementing course assessments; assist the academic departments with documenting and improving based upon their programmatic assessment data
  • Oversee curriculum and instructional design projects; responsible for holding project leads accountable and providing necessary support

Team Leadership (25%)

  • Provide support, direction, and feedback to team members
  • Model behavior that is consistent with the organizational values and guiding principles
  • Hold team members accountable for performance and develop corrective action plans as needed
  • Recruit, hire, and train new staff as needed

Relationship Management (25%)

  • Develop and strengthen relationships with key partners that will advance It’s Time Texas’ impact
  • Lead partner and stakeholder meetings
  • Regularly attend and serve in a leadership capacity at external meetings
  • Engage with partners and program stakeholders regularly to maintain strong relationships
  • Monitor progress on agreements (where applicable) and identify growth opportunities

Strategy (10%)

  • Assist in strategy development that help the organization meet the needs of community stakeholders statewide
  • Play a key role in the annual planning process for Health & Civic Education
  • Participate in program design and development activities for existing and new offerings

Funder Management, Reporting & Budgeting (5%)

  • Assist in budgeting process as necessary
  • Assist in organizational and/or grant/contract reporting
  • Support the development and/or reporting of grant/funding proposals
  • Ensure that the team operates within the approved budgets and grant/contract agreements

Organizational Leadership (5%)

  • Work with leadership across the organization to implement a matrixed organizational structure that increases support for our efforts, provides growth/leadership opportunities for staff, and widens the ownership/understanding of key programs, events, and initiatives
  • Support other teams in accomplishing organization-wide goals

What You’ll Bring

  • 4 years of public health experience required; nutrition and physical activity experience preferred
  • 2+ years of curricula development required
  • 2+ years of instructional design preferred
  • 3+ years of leading and supervising teams preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or related field required or Master’s Degree preferred
