Consumers Self Help Center (CSHC) is a consumer run agency providing advocacy, peer support and education for individuals with mental health and substance abuse challenges. The mission of CSHC is to develop and implement consumer driven programs and services based on the self-help philosophy and provide culturally competent and integrated co-occurring mental health and substance abuse services that support participants in a strength-based process of wellness and recovery based on empowerment, self-responsibility, and integration into the community.

Consumers Self Help Center is seeking a responsible candidate for a critical role in Sacramento County's Wellness Centers!
CSHC is partnering with Turning Point Community Programs (TPCP), specifically to work within TPCP’s Community Wellness Centers for the Community Outreach Recovery Empowerment (CORE) Programs. Community Wellness Centers offer meaningful activities, including peer-led activities, groups, and experiences that promote principles of wellness, recovery, and resiliency. The CORE Wellness Mentor position is a key role in the Community Wellness Center focusing on providing an array of Peer services and engagement.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Provide Peer support and recovery-oriented supportive services and activities (e.g.: group facilitation, cultural, educational, social, recreational, and vocational activities)
- Promote key concepts of individual recovery including hope, personal empowerment, respect, social connection, self-responsibility, and self-determination.
- Provide navigation support including information, referrals, and linkage to mental health programs and other health systems
- Actively integrate the principles of wellness and recovery in service delivery
- Engage and assist participants in obtaining resources in the community
- Offer coaching and mentoring activities including setting recovery goals, personal plans, providing support towards obtaining personally defined wellness
- Operate from a strengths-based approach when engaging with staff and members
- Assisting participants with coordination and implementation of participant driven recovery goals
- Act as a mandated reporter, including the “duty to warn”
- Adhere to Protected Health Information (PHI) requirements provided in the agencies Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Manual
- Maintain interaction and documentation of specifically identified unhoused members, as needed
- Complete performance outcome data collection and documentation of services e.g.: Avatar Electronic Health Records system and Homeless Management Information System (HMIS)
- Enhance and support participant recovery skills in daily life
- Maintain effective working relationships with staff, public and private agencies, and groups involved in CORE programs and activities
- Collaborate with CORE program staff to meet the needs of members including various CORE Services Specialist
- Attend meetings occurring in the office, offsite, and via video conference
- Conduct community outreach, including maintaining and enhancing program reputation in the community
- Provide a supportive environment for members and volunteers
- Crisis Intervention and emergency linkage
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

- Possession of any combination of lived experience that has contributed to your ability to provide services to our members with dignity and respect while performing the necessary job duties; lived experience may include self-identification as a consumer or a family member of who identifies as a consumer or as a member of another disadvantaged group (Lived Experience is defined as personal experience with mental health challenges and/or substance use disorders, or, are an immediate family member to someone with Lived Experience).
- Experience working/volunteering in any combination of mental health, human services, community outreach, or service-based programs (6 months minimum)
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrate culturally sensitive and appropriate interaction
- Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to navigate potentially stressful situations encountered on the job without endangering the health or well-being of themselves, their coworkers, clients, or the public
- Experience with computer functions such as email, word processing, data entry, saving files, and document retrieval
- Experience with or ability to learn virtual meeting programs e.g.: Zoom, Microsoft teams and new software
- Participation in various required and ongoing trainings e.g.: safety, sexual harassment, and documentation.
- Demonstrates professionalism in the workplace and expectations for appropriate workplace behavior, performance, and communications
- Able to deal with changes, delays, and/or unexpected events while being flexible, and dependable
- Great attitude and takes initiative
- Balances team and individual responsibilities
- Possess the ability to take directives, initiative, collaboratively and independently operate, and has problem solving capacity
- Ability to lift 30 lbs.
- (Desired) Wellness and Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), Nonviolent Communication, Recovery Planning, other MH focused certifications or trainings
- Other critical abilities to access marginalized populations such as bilingualism, sign language, etc. are welcomed
- A current CA driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required
- DOJ background check is required
KNOWLEDGE OF
- The core principles of the recovery model and the evidence-based practice of peer support
- Consumer-driven philosophy including self-help, individual wellness, shared power and decision-making, client-directed services, trauma-informed care, person-centered care, culturally-and linguistically responsive services, and strengths-based model
- Motivational Interviewing and Peer Counseling techniques
- Sacramento County Mental Health system and other community resources and services
- Health, Housing, Employment, Education and Benefit acquisition e.g.: SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR)
- Community defined practices and alternative practices that support wellness & recovery skills
