Job description
  • A minimum of 12 months experience in related fabricating/specialist/repairman work.
  • Must be able to apply math and reading skills.
  • Must be familiar with fabricating practices, design jigs and fixtures, work with metals, wood and fiberglass.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a Model Maker/Repairman/Specialist in the TAPC section with the responsibility for the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of training aids, VISMODS and devices required by the Training Support Center.
  • Paint with brush or spray units, all major items and devices produced, letters and color codes signs, field markers, and components of intricate models.
  • Maintain and repairs all locally produced and developed training aids, to include mechanical and electrical units.
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards, policies and practices as well as company standards and quality control
    procedures.
  • Provide customer assistance and advice in a proficient and professional manner.

Supplementary Functions May Include:

  • Perform cross leveling tasks as necessary to enhance mission accomplishment and personal growth. Perform housekeeping duties as required to maintain the work area in good and clean working conditions. Maintain inventories of shop materials, hardware and tools. Assist higher grade/skilled craftsmen.
Position Requirements

Educational Equivalent:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of basic experience in wood, metal, plastic and fiberglass work, and torch cutting. Specific Knowledge: Basic technical knowledge of set up and operation of shop machines, tools and equipment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints/drawings and work from verbal instruction and/or sketches.
  • Must be familiar with lathe, mill, MIG & TIG welding operations. Licenses: Valid CA license and forklift license of 12,000 lbs.
  • Skills Required: Able to skillfully work with the diverse types of hand tools listed under equipment/tools used on the last page. From detailed instructions and simple diagrams/sketches, fabricates device type and 3-dimensional training aids to include scaled down and full-scale models. Produce instructional aids from metals and other media such as wood, plastics and fiberglass.
  • Inspect and repair VISMOD kits at battalion motor pools.
  • Communication Skills: Effectively assimilates verbal guidance and instructions into positive action. Able to read and write in English language.
  • Physical/Mental Abilities Required: No documented pre-existing medical conditions which would prevent the wearing of safety equipment or clothing. Able to lift 45lb unassisted.
  • Working Conditions: Position: Shop environment, frequently outdoors. Frequent exposure to dust, desert pollen, extreme heat and cold associated with desert environment and natural conditions existing on Fort Irwin.
