Maintenance Project System Engineer (AMTRAK Next Generation High Speed Train)
Objective
System Engineers (SE) are responsible for conserving and optimizing the global performance of the train.
They are the technical reference for the subsystem(s) which they are assigned and maintain a link with the Design Authority.
Their job during the warranty period is largely dedicated to supporting reliability growth by eliminating technical anomalies.
They also provide from Day 1 all necessary technical inputs for Maintenance execution.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities
In the context of Next Generation High Speed Trains project, ALSTOM is offering a high level of Maintenance Service to AMTRAK (operator), under the form of TSSSA contract (Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement).
Each sub-system of the train is allocated to a “Leader” System Engineer (SE) who has the responsibility to:
- Manage technical subjects related to Train design, in particular:
- Design anomalies from detection to fix, leading necessary analysis, investigations, meetings
- Design changes from request to validation, including analysis of impact & business case, if necessary.
Remark: during the warranty phase, this responsibility is led by the Design team, and Service SE are contributing heavily.
- Manage all technical subjects related to Maintenance, in particular:
- Implementation and optimization of Maintenance Plan in operations, including related validations
- Technical inputs to build maintenance procedures (e.g., define wear limit criteria, test procedure,etc.)
- Monitor system performance, in particular: Safety, Reliability, Serviceability.
- Drive the related analysis and keeping traceability of reports, decisions, etc.
- Inform the Safety Assurance Manager of any safety hazard, so that it can be dealt with appropriately.
- Then addressing the technical job for closing the issue.
- Provide technical inputs to the whole Maintenance Site organization:
- On-Site Engineers supporting Amtrak production team
- Alstom Troubleshooters
- Training Manager
- Monitor obsolescence and develop resolution plan for subsystems assigned
- Optimize testability on-train (as a team with Troubleshooters) and off-train (in collaboration with external vendors and Alstom repair centers)
Position in Alstom organization:
- No direct reports.
- Multiple functional relations.
- Reporting functionally to Maintenance Project – Lead System Engineering
- Reporting hierarchically to the TSSSA Project Engineering Manager.
Educational Requirements
B.S. Engineering degree.
Experience (Essential Functions)
Minimum 2 years working “hands on” around on-board equipment: design, validation, troubleshooting, maintenance
Ideally in the environment of Rolling Stock warranty and reliability growth.
Working Conditions (Industrial/Environmental)
The position is based in Washington, DC (Ivy City Amtrak facility)
Initial travel: 50% during the first year, especially to Philadelphia (commissioning site), Hornell (manufacturing), and Supplier sites
Average travel: 20% time, especially to the other train maintenance facilities of Long Island City, NY and Boston MA.
