Overview:
The Landscape Assistant is a Ministerial Support position. Ministerial Support staff serve in operational and service support roles and are not required to personally affirm Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) Christian mission, vision and beliefs. However, it is expected that staff who fill these roles – no matter their personal beliefs - respect, work in harmony with, and not undermine MHA’s Christian mission, vision and beliefs. Additionally, they are required to abide by MHA’s culture code and standards of conduct. All staff are expected to join gatherings, which includes prayer, worship, and Bible-centered teaching.

Position Objective:
The Landscape Assistant works in a safe and efficient manner with the Landscaper and the rest of the Facilities Team in keeping the buildings and grounds at Mount Hermon maintained at the high level of excellence to contribute to an outstanding and life transforming guest experience in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.
Key Job Accountabilities
- Mow and maintain all lawns at Ponderosa Lodge, Conference Center and Redwood Camp, including performing irrigation repairs and maintenance, ensuring the least impact on our guest’s experience while at the same time, maintaining the lawns to a high standard of quality.
- Plant, irrigate, weed and maintain flowerbeds in key areas of the grounds as determined by the Landscaper and the Maintenance Manager during the best time to work with the least impact on our guest’s experience.
- Trim, prune, maintain and occasionally remove trees and other vegetation throughout all MHA grounds, including all public areas, cabins, trails and roadways as directed by the Landscaper.
- Conduct preventative maintenance and inspection procedures on equipment, tools and systems throughout the buildings and grounds.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Landscaper or the Facilities Manager.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- The Landscape Assistant occasionally directs the work of part time seasonal employees as well as volunteers.
Part-time seasonal position (6/1/2023-9/1/2023); Wage $17.50 per hour.
Qualifications:
Education:
- There is no specific educational requirement for this position.
Work Experience:
- 1 - 2 years of experience in horticulture and landscaping.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
:
- Ability to help establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives with little supervision.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Computer skills required, including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and added duties on a daily basis.
- Ability to use "smart" phone or similar hand-held device.
Physical Demands:
- Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds continually over the course of the work day without limitation and be physically able to meet the demands of various labor intensive duties as listed under "Key Job Accountabilities."
- The Landscape Assistant may spend long hours outside in all sorts of weather conditions and in awkward positions which can cause physical discomfort and strain. The Landscape Assistant may be lifting and adjusting heavy objects, digging holes and trenches and performing other physically demanding activities.
Additional Requirements :
- Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in Mount Hermon’s Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
- Willingness to attend training classes or seminars as directed by the Facilities and Property Manager.
- Ability to operate powered equipment such as trucks, mowers, tractors, chippers, log splitters, tillers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, etc. Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saw, hedge and brush trimmers, shears, etc.
- May be required to train other staff members or volunteers in their areas of specific skills and knowledge as well as actively seeking knowledge and skills from others (i.e. cross training).
- Must agree to and comply with MHA’s employee driving guidelines for MHA-owned vehicles and use of personal vehicles for business purposes.
- Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
- Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
