Under the general supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Care, is responsible for the day-to-day management of the EEG/Neuro Lab and the functional supervision of the EEG Technologist. Performs a wide variety of Neurodiagnostic studies, to include EEGs, and evoked potentials, in the EEG Laboratory, as well as in the inpatient setting. Also, may provide EEG testing to patients at the Bradley Hospital on an as-needed basis. Performs all essential functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of the geriatric, adult, and adolescent patient. Fosters patient and family centered care and healthcare services, in accordance with the Lifespan and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision and values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.
Responsibilities:
- Writes a comprehensive patient history, gathering appropriate information from patient, patient’s record and family members to include seizure types, date of last seizure, other neurological symptomatology and medications. Explains test procedure to patient and family members present.
- Measures and accurately applies electrodes according to the International 10-20 electrode systems. Ensures that electrodeimpedance meet laboratory standards.
- Performs EEG tracing (routine, portable, and Electrocerebral silence recordings), and evoked potential tests, in all three modalities, according to the standards of the Laboratory.
- Performs evoked potential tests implementing alternative methods such as variations of stimulus parameters in certain situations outside of the normative range, to better define any abnormalities.
- Performs advanced Neurodiagnostic procedures to include digital EEG and Topographic mapping of EEG/EP data.
- Performs EEG/EP recording during selected intraoperative procedures, as requested by surgical staff and under the direction of an attending neurologist. Relays information to surgeons during the procedure.
- Provides functional supervision for technologists in the department, including the development of performance standards; interviewing, orienting, and training new staff; daily assignment of duties. Provides guidance and counsel to staff.
- Develops and maintains department procedures and protocols. Works with the Manager and Medical Director to initiate new procedures for Neurodiagnostic testing .
- Performs troubleshooting and equipment maintenance of EEG, evoked response and other laboratory instruments.
- Performs routine supply inventory.
- Participates in conferences and technical meetings.
- Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control, in accordance with established hospital department policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Performs other related duties, as required. Fosters patient and family centered care in accordance with the Lifespan mission, vision and values and the philosophy of nursing at The Miriam Hospital and with consideration of the life span, including alevelopmental stages as well as cultural patterns
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Graduate of an Electroneurodiagnostic Technology Program, accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation or equivalent formal training. Registered by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET) preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients in consideration of the aging process, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
Five years progressively responsible experience in Electroneurodiagnostic testing. Some supervisory or lead experience is preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Functional supervision of 1.0 to 2.0 FTEs EEG Technicians.
