Job Summary
The Physical Science Laboratory Specialist Supervisor oversees the daily operation of our chemistry laboratories and provides supervision of staff in the preparation of equipment, materials and facility spaces used for instruction and laboratory experiments. Handles and arranges for disposal of hazardous waste. Responsible for the development, implementation, and staff/student worker training of laboratory safety procedures that adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and best practices as described by the American Chemical Society (ACS). Oversees the work of assigned staff and students in a safe laboratory environment. Coordinates with faculty and staff in the creation and implementation of chemistry laboratory schedules each semester.
Essential Functions
60% - Prepares lab chemicals and handles waste following proper safety practices and protocols; Maintains clean work areas, including student laboratories and instrument rooms; Responds to faculty requests for classroom or laboratory support; Monitors stockroom window and provides assistance to students requiring chemicals or equipment; Maintains a physical presence on site at all times unless on lunch or other breaks allowed for this position, or on errands obtaining equipment and supplies for student labs; is not absent from MCC’s physical plant for more than one hour without prior approval.
15% - Directs the safe work of the Department’s full-time Laboratory Technician/Laboratory Technician Senior staff and student workers, including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures.
15% - Purchases equipment and materials needed for the smooth operation of the Department’s chemistry lab sections; Maintains and repairs lab equipment, including but not limited to analytical balances, pH meters, melting point apparati, refractometers, polarimeters, rotary evaporators, NMR spectrometer, IR spectrophotometers, Pt electrodes, and gas chromatographs; Maintains features of the physical plant including deionized water supply, vacuum system, emergency showers and eyewash stations, and fume hoods; Keeps stockroom and equipment storage areas well-organized and maintains chemical storage in accordance with OSHA standards and best practices outlined by the ACS.
10% - Keeps both maintenance and inventory records; Documents work procedures daily; Creates reports as requested; Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, four full-time equivalent years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two years of lead work or senior level experience.

High School Diploma/GED and six full time equivalent years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two years of lead work or senior level experience.
Desired Qualifications
A. Four (4) years of college education in chemistry, including general, organic, and analytical chemistry, both lecture and lab.
B. Experience with MS office, Google Apps, and Adobe Acrobat. Experience with processing software used in conjunction with chemical instrumentation, e.g. MestreNova, Vernier, and others.
C. Experience using & maintaining scientific and chemical instrumentation as outlined in “Essential Functions”.
D. Evidence of organizational skills and experience maintaining records.
