Salary range: $55,000 to $65,000 depending on experience and interview process
Location: National Museum of Health and Medicine, Fort Detrick-Forest Glen Annex in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The Museum Specialist-Historical provides technical support to the NMHM Historical Collections manager and historical division. This position is primarily responsible for assisting with collection management of the historical collection including documenting and preparing historical artifacts for storage and use by researchers or exhibitions. This job is located at the National Museum of Health and Medicine, Fort Detrick-Forest Glen Annex in Silver Spring, Maryland.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Master’s degree in museum studies with a specialization in History or related field.
- 5 years of relevant museum or collections management experience.
DESIRED COMPETENCIES:
- Professional knowledge of standard museum practices, packing, and transportation of museum artifacts and fine arts, care, handling, and storage of museum objects, and relative environmental and security requirements.
- Knowledge of medical history, history of technology, or military history is preferred.
- Knowledge and use of collections management software (Ke EMu preferred).
- Ability to work in confined collections storage areas, ability to climb ladders, and use basic materials handling equipment such as dollies, pallet jacks, flatbed carts, hand drills, etc.
- Employee will also be required to operate a forklift and elevated platform in the performance of duties.
- Ability to safely lift supplies or museum objects weighing over 30 lbs.
KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts work with regard to the acquisition, handling, cataloging, storage, and conservation of material objects and associated materials.
- Compiles organizes, and preserves records and supporting documentation for all items in Historical Division collections.
- Enters and maintains electronic information on Historical Collection objects in the collections management database Ke EMu.
- Performs and provides technical internal and external research assistance services.
- Conducts and conveys research on collections care and management.
- Develops guidelines for policy implementation.
- Makes contributions to exhibits and programs by participating in planning, and working with exhibits and production staff.
- Advises on handling and displaying of historical artifacts.
