Boulder Knoll Community Farm is a small-scale, environmentally sustainable farm in
Cheshire, CT that leases gardening plots to individuals and community groups, including a gardening collaborative called Seeds&Weeds. We strive to support the planting, growth and harvesting of healthy produce for our member gardeners, as we address food insecurity in the community by donating excess produce.

Job Overview
The FOBK Farmer will plan, coordinate, and lead our collaborative gardening group, fondly called
Seeds&Weeds, as well as the garden area dedicated to providing produce for our Farm to Table Dinner in mid-August. This is a hands-on job where soil health and crop planning expertise are essential.
Equally important is an ability to communicate often and effectively with enthusiastic gardeners who have a wide range of experience and expertise.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Plan, oversee and coordinate the 2023 growing season for both the Seeds&Weeds gardens and

Farm to Table Garden.

  • Be physically on site and available to Seeds&Weeds gardeners as an organic farming resource, including planning, prepping, planting, nurturing and harvesting crops and providing information, instruction and education as needed on a mutually agreed upon schedule;
  • Create and share a seasonal calendar, including crop timeline, to coordinate efforts throughout

2023.

  • Create and implement consistent, effective communication messaging, including organic gardening best practices, to Seeds&Weeds gardeners.
  • Establish timely and effective communication channels with key Farm to Table Dinner stakeholders.
  • Create seasonal garden-task opportunities for Seeds&Weeds members to learn and work together.

General Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of organic sustainable farming
  • Good communicator with strong people management skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Self-starter with initiative, flexibility, and organizational strengths
  • Physically strong and able to hand farm equipment, work garden plots and lead work teams

Hours and Compensation
The Farmer will be expected to average 7 to 8 hours a week, from May to November. Hours will be on- site, and some weekend hours may be necessary.

This is an independent contractor position, offering no fringe benefits and income taxes will not be withheld. Compensation will depend on experience and hours worked. We ask for a full-season commitment.
