Position Summary Information

General Information
The Executive Director (ED) of the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council (SVTC) serves as the primary executive and administrative officer for the organization and independently determines the daily direction of the council. The ED is a grant-funded position that supervises all SVTC employees and determines the execution and steps necessary to carry out the mission of the SVTC. The ED organizes and leads the organization, serves on the leadership team, and operates under the supervision of the Executive Committee (EC) and Board of Directors (BoD), as per SVTC Bylaws.

The SVTC is a stand-alone nonprofit with an affiliate relationship with James Madison University.

This position will work an average of 29 hours per week, with hours fluctuating throughout the year based on high or low activity. This position will work no more than 1,500 hours per year, and is not eligible for benefits.

Remote and Hybrid Work Opportunity
The SVTC has a physical office in the Ice House (127 W Bruce St) in downtown Harrisonburg, in close proximity to JMU’s School of Professional & Continuing Education (SPCE) offices. The office is available at any time for the ED. That said, the nature of the work often does not require physical presence in the office, and allows the ED to work in hybrid manner as negotiated with the SVTC Board of Directors. That said, in-person attendance at key events is expected.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Promote the SVTC throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia
  • Sustain membership, recruit new members, and evaluate membership benefits
  • Facilitate the development and execution of a strategic plan
  • Serve on the SVTC Executive Committee as a non-voting officer
  • Develop and implement programs and events consistent with the strategic plan
  • Use web-based systems to create weekly newsletter, event reminders, and publicity on the SVTC website (WordPress; Constant Contact; Adobe Suite/graphics creation)
  • Perform daily financial tasks as well as management and reporting
    • Serve as Principal Officer for the merchant account
    • Operate QuickBooksOnline (invoicing, receipt of payments, reconciliation, create budget with Treasurer)
    • Prepare information for Treasurer’s reporting
  • Maintain awareness and compliance with all JMU employment requirements, policies, and reporting
  • Facilitate SVTC committees and support their work and record keeping
  • Provide documentation support to the SVTC Secretary
  • Represent SVTC and its membership in appropriate forums throughout the region to create partnerships, joint events, and projects
  • Offer and facilitate SVTC resources in support of regional activities
  • Update and report on ED activities to the BoD and Executive Committee

Qualifications
Required Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
  • Knowledge and interest in the technology industry (not necessarily a technologist)
  • Ability to effectively lead and delegate
  • Comfortable with appropriate application of business-related technology (e.g. web-based systems, Constant Contact, Google Workspace, graphics design)
  • Effective marketing, fundraising, and budget management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – engaging with stakeholders, members, the public
  • Ability to design and deploy effective marketing materials
  • Demonstrate effective organizational skills
  • Effectively navigate flexible work schedule with prioritization and management of multiple projects
  • Experience with membership management, fundraising, and budget


Not required but a plus
  • Possesses previous non-profit or related association experience
  • Event planning experience
  • Maintains existing regional contacts and/or network in business and government
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
