This Opportunity

WSP is seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer with broad technical knowledge of construction methods, design, sustainability, and industry advancements to join our A/E Design Center in our Portland, Maine office. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background to lead design engineering for electrical power supply and distribution, communications, security, fire alarm, emergency power systems and lighting systems for new construction and renovation projects both as part of an interdisciplinary design team and individually.

The Portland, Maine Office is a multi-disciplinary science/engineering/architecture team of 150+ staff, located in one of the most livable cities in the US. WSP offers the technical challenges of projects located throughout the US and globally within the relaxed environment of a small, vibrant city. As a Lead Electrical Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for helping grow our operations into one of WSP’s premiere service centers by providing technical expertise and mentoring, as well as delivering excellence in sustainable and functional electrical designs for facilities across a variety of markets including Federal, State, Industrial, and Commercial. The ideal candidate will have significant technical expertise in the development of bid and construction documents and will lead multi-disciplinary project teams from concept design through completion of construction. Recent and ongoing projects include the design of building renovations and new construction for Federal and State office buildings, museums, and visitor facilities; industrial office space, warehouses, and maintenance facilities; and high-security government and radar facilities. We also have several ongoing design standards development projects for Federal agencies.

Your Impact

  • Lead design engineering for electrical power supply and distribution, communications, security, fire alarm, and lighting systems for a wide variety of facilities, from initial concept design through completion of construction.
  • Attract, coach and mentor Junior and Intermediate Electrical Engineers and Designers helping to develop their technical skills and careers.
  • Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, designers, and sub-consultants to complete design and technical portions of projects on-time and within budget.
  • Prepare construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Supervise the preparation and check the accuracy of deliverables.
  • Collaborate with WSP’s other design centers to grow A/E opportunities and develop new business.
  • Survey and evaluate electrical systems in existing buildings.
  • Review existing drawings supplied by vendors, clients, and engineers and field verify accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate with other building design disciplines and work in a team environment.
  • Support proposal preparation and business development, creating technical scopes of work and budget estimates.
  • Communicate both verbally and in written form in a clear and professional manner with engineers, construction managers, equipment suppliers, contractors, and client representatives.
  • Delegate design tasks to junior staff and review their work for quality and accuracy.
  • Work with senior staff to develop and continuously improve department design and execution standards.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Electrical Engineer’s license with ability to obtain multiple state licenses through NCEES
  • 7 to 10 years’ experience in performing design of the following types of systems:
    • Electrical distribution
    • Interior electrical
    • Transformers
    • Communications
    • Lighting
    • Industrial controls and security control
    • Emergency power systems
    • Instrumentation and energy conservationExperience developing construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and construction planning documents
  • Experience in conducting design reviews, field assessments and construction administration
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Well-versed in the application of the National Electrical Code
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of electrical safety systems and NFPA 70E
