Job description
ACTIVEcharge (https://ACTIVEcharge.us), a University of Maryland-affiliated technology innovation startup, was founded in 2018 and we have been awarded several awards from the state of Maryland, the energy industry, and most recently awarded the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding by the US National Science Foundation (NSF)
Our focus is on developing solutions for autonomous, self-powered monitoring of hard-to-reach components, as well as real-time analysis of data obtained from the monitoring devices. Our technology is aimed at automating difficult and dangerous tasks and identifying issues before they turn into catastrophic accidents.
We have identified wind turbine blade monitoring as our initial commercialization area. The wind turbine blades are getting bigger, often 300ft (100m) long. If a blade is damaged or broken, the whole wind farm is required to shut down to thoroughly check every blade. Wind farm stoppage results in loss of electricity generation. In addition, the wind farm operator needs to replace damaged blades and submit insurance claims. Instead, continuous monitoring of blades can detect several issues before they turn into major problems. Although several approaches have been tried (drones, remote sensing, etc.), the market currently lacks an optimal solution to continuously monitor wind turbine blades.
We believe our innovative, patent-pending solution can meet this critical market need. Our solution consists of two parts:
1. HARDWARE: Our in-house designed and fabricated devices that integrate self-power generation/management, sensors, and data transmission. We put these devices inside the blade to detect vibrations, lightning strikes, and Ice-buildup.
2. ANALYTICS: Data capture, analysis, display, and integration with the Wind Turbine Controller (WTC) software.
WHOM ARE WE LOOKING FOR? A self-driven, creative, hands-on person who will design and develop the ANALYTICS part of our solution. This consists of data capture (from the devices put in the blades), visualization/dashboarding, predictive analytics, and integration with the wind turbine controller software.
The incoming Director of Data Analytics will be very conversant with methodologies and software tools to capture, analyze, and display real-time data. A degree in data science/analytics AND demonstrable experience is required. In addition, technical background (e.g., Mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, etc.) will be helpful to interface well with the rest of the solution area stakeholders.
The position is based in the Baltimore/Washington DC area and can be structured as a hybrid (working in the research lab, in-person team meetings, and the rest of the time working remotely). The annual salary is about $60k plus healthcare benefits. Although this position is initially for one year, there is a high probability of continuation as we are applying for additional funding.
The wind energy industry is rapidly expanding globally, including in the US. This is a great opportunity for an enterprising person to be part of the journey to develop an innovative solution for a fast-growing, clean energy industry.
Candidates selected for the next step in the hiring process will be contacted by Monday, May 15th, 2023, or earlier. The start date for this job could be as early as June 1st, 2023.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,000.00 per year
