Department of Animal Science
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented identities to apply.
CALS is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.
Department/Position Summary
The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health. The Department’s 16 faculty members, many internationally recognized, have diverse interests in animal management, breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, and growth biology.
PRO-DAIRY, administratively housed in the Department of Animal Science, is Cornell CALS’ flagship applied research and educational program focused on the dairy industry at the farm level. PRO-DAIRY programs span from Farm Business Management to Environmental Stewardship to Dairy Herd Management to Dairy Youth Programs.
For 30 years PRO-DAIRY has linked New York’s dairy farmers and agribusiness professionals to critical research and resources, giving them the information they need to build and manage robust businesses. PRO-DAIRY’s contributions to educational programming and applied research have helped New York farmers continue to lead in milk production and remain among the top dairy states. According to national agriculture statistics, New York has been a national leader in dairy growth for the past 10 years. Through its research, discussion groups, educational programs, financial analysis, websites, publications and personal contacts, the Cornell University based program reaches thousands of dairy professionals annually.
The Dairy Environmental Model Support Specialist will provide support for the development, maintenance, and deployment of cattle- and whole-farm-based models that assess and identify opportunities to mitigate the environmental impact of dairy production. Primary models of focus include the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) and the Ruminant Farm Systems Model (RuFaS). The incumbent will work closely with the leaders of these modeling efforts and their research teams.
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a one year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
No relocation assistance is provided for this position. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
