The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for a Full time P ermanent Corrections Sergeant at MCCCW, located in Belfair, WA.

MISSION CREEK CORRECTIONS CENTER FOR WOMEN is a minimum-custody facility for adult women. MCCCW's focus is to prepare female incarcerated individuals for their transition back into our communities. To do this, DOC provides opportunity for pre-screened incarcerated individuals to work on supervised work crews which include sustainable projects, fish hatchery projects, salmon habitat preservation, and other community and park maintenance. The incarcerated individuals learn to develop good work ethics, expand their work skills and abilities, and provide a service to the community. In addition the facility provides other programs to enhance successful reentry.

The facility is located Tahuya State Forest outside Belfair, Washington about 30 minutes south of Bremerton. Some staff choose to live close by; others commute from surrounding areas of Bremerton, Gig Harbor, or Tacoma. Close to the Olympic Mountains, Hood Canal, and Case Inlet, the area affords opportunity for many kinds of outdoor activities and water sports. Duties

  • Supervise Corrections & Custody Officers.
  • Plan, assign, and review the work of staff.
  • Provide on-the-job training and monitor completion of the on-the-job training requirements of in-training Corrections and Custody Officers.
  • Evaluate employee performance and prepare performance appraisals.
  • Resolve staff issues.
  • Supervise all aspects of Shift Operations and/or Unit Operations.
  • Ensure security of institution and control movement into, out of, and within the institution.
  • Provide subordinate staff with the tools and skills needed to perform duties in a safe and secure manner.
  • Monitor incarcerated individuals activities and movement.
  • Oversee the operation of gates, cameras, turnstiles, sally ports, and other movement control systems.
  • Read, understand, and follow Post Orders. Review regularly with staff and monitor compliance.
  • Ensure formal and informal counts.
  • Operate communication devices such as two-way radio. Convey information among personnel.
  • Maintain proper use, control, and accountability of keys, tools, and equipment.
  • Apply appropriate, constructive, and professional authority working with a diverse population of incarcerated individuals.
  • Strictly adhere to established staff safety practices. Cultivate a culture of safety and accountability within work unit.
  • Advise incarcerated individuals concerning rules, regulations, procedures, institution programs, policies, and behavior standards.
  • Effectively communicate with incarcerated individuals, staff and visitors in routine and emergent situations.
  • Use appropriate de-escalation skills.
  • Utilize electronic security devices such as radios and body alarms as appropriate and as necessary to mitigate the risk of danger or harm to self or others.
  • Direct resistive and non-resistive incarcerated individuals to maintain the orderly operation of the facility.
  • Use physical and/or deadly force.
  • Assist in providing on-the-job training. Monitor completion of the on-the-job training requirements.
  • Ensure searches and inspections are carried out in accordance with established department methods and procedures.
  • Direct or conduct inspections and searches of incarcerated individuals, incarcerated individuals' property, incarcerated individuals' living and program areas, and other areas of the facility.
  • Direct or conduct inspections and searches of staff and visitors, including personal belonging and vehicles.
  • Seize or direct seizure of dangerous items, evidence, contraband, and controlled or unauthorized substances.
  • Communicate information to supervisors and staff regarding issues and areas of concern.
  • Brief appropriate personnel on pertinent information.
  • Recall detailed observations and write reports.
  • Write incident or disciplinary reports.
  • Direct officers in the preparation of infractions, logs, and other reports and review for accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitor daily activity logs for accuracy, completeness and timeliness.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections.

OR

Two (2) years experience as a Correctional Officer in adult corrections AND successful completion of thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) hours of accredited college-level course work from a college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the US Department of Education or foreign equivalent.

In addition to at least one of the above, this position requires:

  • Ability to observe and strategize personal actions based on environmental conditions and human behavior.
  • Ability to learn and utilize computer-based applications in the performance of job duties.
  • Ability to remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervene in response to threats.
  • Ability to know and apply relevant law, policy, procedure, and practice. Adhere to productivity standards and timelines established by law and policy. Identifies own training needs and proactively seeks training opportunities.
  • Ability to incorporate new information into an existing framework of understanding and accepts change and supports the Agency through changes in law, policy, and procedure.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly, factually and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to recall detailed instructions and to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Demonstrated effective oral communication skills in routine and emergent situations.
  • Committed to develop and promote positive and professional interpersonal relationship skills.
PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience supervising employees in a correctional environment.
Experience with a therapeutic community setting and community mission.
