TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

- Provides nursing care to patients in an institution or health center;

- Assists providers with examinations, special procedures and/or specialized therapeutic treatments;

- Gives medication, immunizations and nursing treatment as prescribed by a physician, and notes reactions of patients to medications and treatments;

- Supervises the work of Licensed Practical Nurses, Nurses' Aides and other medical personnel;

- Makes rounds of wards and/or schools, checking patients, nursing stations and supplies;

- Supervises the routine care of patients and their quarters including making beds, changing linens, keeping order, lifting and moving patients, giving baths and rubs and caring for personal effects;

- Obtains medical history of patients or students, and screens for numerous age-appropriate biopsychosocial needs and/or problems, such as domestic violence, smoking, nutrition, parenting, substance abuse, tuberculosis and infectious diseases;

- Counsels and educates patients, parents and families regarding preventive health measures, chronic disease management, and prenatal issues;

- Post-counsels patients regarding the need for further medical attention and provider’s orders, including medications, nutrition, physical activity and the need for further diagnostic tests, and initiates and/or completes referrals to specialists and/or ancillary support services;

- May serve as a member of various health center committees, such as quality assurance and infection control;

- May administer first aid;

- Develops and revises nursing care plans; writes reports and maintains charts on the condition and progress of patients or school students;

- Keeps time records of medical workers;

o Writes accident reports for students and school personnel;

- Notifies physician and relatives and prepares body for the morgue in case of death of the patient.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical practice; good knowledge of medical procedures, sanitation, personal hygiene and dietetics; skill in the application of professional nursing techniques and practices; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of support staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to follow oral and written instructions of a technical and professional nature in exact detail and to administer therapeutic treatments prescribed by a physician; ability to recognize and interpret symptoms; ability to instruct subordinates and other people in basic nursing care; ability to deal with each patient sympathetically and tactfully, while at the same time carry out the treatment prescribed for them; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either:

(a) Possession of a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a registered professional nurse; or

(b) Possession of a limited permit issued by New York State to practice as a registered professional nurse.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must possess, or, for those with limited permits, obtain within one year, a current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of New York, and must maintain a valid registration throughout employment in this title.

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

· -Vacation Time: During the first year, employees are entitled to 10 Vacation days, earned at the rate of 2.75 per pay period totaling 10 days annually. Employees continue to earn vacation days in accordance with the schedule, reaching a maximum of 30 days per year. Unused vacation time rolls over each year until a maximum of 420 hours is reached.

· Sick Time: Earned at the rate of 1/2 day per pay period totaling 13 days annually. Unused sick time is rolled over each year, with no maximum rollover.

· Personal Leave: An employee is granted 4 days of personnel leave each year. Employees receive 7.5 hours on their 1st day and will accrue one additional day every quarter. After employee first anniversary 28 hours of personal days will be frontloaded at the beginning of each year worked. Unused personal time is rolled over into sick each year with no maximum rollover.

· Salary: Step increase every 12 months on July 1st completed year of service in addition to contractual raises through 2024.

· Membership in the New York State Retirement Pension System 5 year vested. In order to retire with Health benefits you need to work a total of 10 continuous years with the county and be 55.
