Job description
Coordinator, Volunteer Programs
Organization Description:
Since 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) has served as the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, collaborating with the Presidio Trust, partners, donors, and the community to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The GGNRA stretches across three Bay Area counties, north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge, and includes iconic places such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco.
The Parks Conservancy engages at the intersection of national park sites, local communities, social justice, and climate resilience. Collaborating with partners, our staff are dedicated to enhancing public awareness and providing volunteer and educational opportunities in the parks. We are park builders, caretakers, ambassadors and educators, all working to connect people to parks, in support of our vision Parks for All Forever. Join us.
Department Description:
Our Volunteers and Internships Department is nested in the Community Connections Branch. We serve as the “front door” for our Bay Area community to connect with the park’s volunteer and internship opportunities, as well as deliver the central operational infrastructure to support these parkwide programs. The department is comprised of 7-12 staff and interns and functions from a basis of collaboration, partnership, teamwork, community, and customer service. Working cooperatively with our partners at the National Park Service and Presidio Trust, the Volunteers and Internships Department bridges the vast array of parkwide service and workforce development programming, engages and connects the community with the parks’ volunteer opportunities, offers immersive and transformative internships, stewards our volunteer and intern community, and provides a foundation of programmatic practice, policy, and administration for program staff.
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area has one of the largest volunteer programs of any national park site in the country. Volunteerism and service have a long rich legacy in our parks—they are part of our DNA and constitute one of the pillars of our work with the community. At the heart of this work, it is about building community, connecting people and parks, and keeping these special places healthy and thriving—all of which makes for a dynamic, inspiring, and rewarding work experience.
Position Overview:
The Coordinator, Volunteer Programs position serves as a primary liaison between the community and our interagency volunteer programs, providing the first point of contact for potential volunteers. This is primarily an office-based position providing administrative and operational support for our parkwide volunteer programs, focused on the coordination of regularly scheduled weekly volunteer programs, group service projects, and annual community volunteer events. Occasionally, there will be field based work to assist with leading volunteer projects. This position works closely and collaboratively with program management staff across the Parks Conservancy, National Park Service, and The Presidio Trust. A competitive candidate will be someone who has some program coordination or office administration experience, maintains positive and collaborative working relationships, and is excited to engage our local communities in the parks.
