The US Embassy in Brussels is looking for a Consular Cashier


Description of the function

The incumbent is the fulltime cashier for consular operations. Receives and records payments for consular services. Deals courteously and professionally with the public in English and in French. Balances accounts and maintains records of consular receipts. In addition to cashiering duties, processes U.S. citizen passport applications.

Fee Collection and Preparation of Reports

Receives payments of fees paid in local currency, U.S. Dollars, and credit cards for consular services. Handles up to $250,000 in USD equivalent cash per year and up to $1.5 million from all payment sources annually. Enters payment data in ACRS automated cashiering system. Submits daily and monthly reports to Class B cashier and Accountable Consular Officer. Works directly with the public, assisting them professionally and courteously.

Consular Clerking Duties

Receives DS-11 applications from applicants, ensures the accuracy and completion of application and submitted documents. Ensures integrity of information and corrects errors. Data entry into ACS, mailing out cases, closing cases.

Record Keeping and System Maintenance

Balances accounts according to Consular SOPs and FAM/FAH authorities. Maintains records of monthly receipts and other financial documents as required by regulation. Updates information in the ACRS cash register system, including changes in the fee schedule or exchange rate changes as directed by the Bureau of Consular Affairs.


Profile description

EXPERIENCE: One year of work handling currency and face-to-face interaction with clients in a customer-service oriented setting.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must quickly become knowledgeable of fee structure for the full range of Consular services, departmental guidance, and local laws. Detailed knowledge of the ACRS Cash Register System, including procedures for obtaining technical support. Up-to-date knowledge of trends in counterfeiting.

Education Requirements:

Completion of high school (U.S.) or equivalent non-U.S. secondary school.

LANGUAGE: Good working knowledge in English and French. Ability to explain financial concepts and problem-solve in both languages with customers.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be absolutely trustworthy and willing to handle and be responsible for the disposition of large sums of cash. Customer service orientation: accurate, quick, professional and courteous service to the public at all times. Meticulous and detail-oriented: accurate data entry and cash-counting at all times. Good communication skills, with the ability to exercise tact and discretion when dealing with the public. Able to work as part of a team and flexible to learn other consular procedures in order to back up colleagues. Experience with the Microsoft Office suite.
