Job Description

The Department of Housing and Community Development is seeking a creative, energetic, proactive candidate to market the Department's programs and provide a variety of community outreach activities.

The Community Development Specialist:

  • Facilitates educational and informational workshops to educate renters and first-time homebuyers on rental assistance programs as well as home purchase procedures, finance and maintenance.
  • Works with public and private sector employers to provide information to the workforce about housing programs and services.
  • Develops and distributes information through a variety of media outlets.
  • Develops and tabulates surveys; -Implements a systematic marketing approach.
  • Manages and updates electronic distribution lists.
  • Streamlines communication processes to ensure efficient public service.
  • Develops and coordinates events, displays, power point presentations, webinars, and materials for use in workshops.
  • Works collaboratively with staff to plan, implement and report progress with annual performance goals.

Sample projects include:

  • Organizing an annual housing summit and forums
  • Developing a speakers' series
  • Messaging a community awareness campaign about the need for affordable housing
  • Compiling an annual apartment guide
  • Assembling data for grant applications
  • Managing the community participation requirements for the consolidated plan

Requires the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with department staff and key representatives from various community organizations; the ability to work independently and meet stringent deadlines; and solid organizational and time management skills.

Salary commensurate with experience.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Urban Policy, Housing, Communications, or Marketing; or related field; three (3) years of related work experience preferably in marketing and community outreach for housing programs; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Bilingual skills preferred. (Spanish/English and/or other prominent non-English language)
Certified Housing Counselor; VHDA Homebuyer Education "Train the Trainer" Certification strongly preferred.

Special Requirements

Requires attendance at early morning and evening meetings, and occasional events on Saturdays.
