The Program of Exercise Science at Marquette University is seeking a dynamic, motivated and problem-solving Clinical faculty member to join our faculty starting in July of 2023. We are seeking applicants for a full time participating, clinical assistant professor in charge of the practicums (12 month, non-tenure-track). Marquette University is a major research university where teaching, research and service are all highly valued. Our highly successful undergraduate major feeds directly into the physical therapy doctoral degree as well as other post bachelorette clinical and graduate programs. Housed within the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Science we pride ourselves on a rigorous basic science foundation and exceptional critical thinking skills provided to our students and their outstanding placement in graduate and clinical programs as well as into diverse clinical exercise physiology practice settings.
This position requires collaboration with faculty within the Program in Exercise Science and Department of Physical Therapy including exercise physiologists and athletic trainers. Teaching across the curriculum includes graduate, undergraduate and professional students during the fall, spring and summer depending upon courses assigned with particular emphasis in the undergraduates in the exercise physiology major. The successful candidate will teach to meet national standards and ensure continued mastery of clinical skills and contribute to the development of exceptional exercise physiologists committed to sustained learning and delivering compassionate exercise physiology. In particular, the faculty will coordinate of all weekly practicums for all juniors and the full time capstone practicums for seniors. This includes the management of practicums, formation of new, development of contracts, communication with site coordinators/mentors, troubleshooting/resolving conflicts, mentoring students in the selection process and careers. To include developing new sites as needed in all areas of the exercise physiology domain (clinical, small business, corporate and wellness industries). Teaching will include two professional courses associated with the practicum: professional development and leadership skills for exercise physiologist. Additional Teaching assignment will be related to expertise.
Classes are delivered in a standard semester format (fall/spring) and 6 or 12-week summer sessions. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Exercise Science. Clinical faculty participate in all program and university governance including academic advising, service to the profession and community, faculty shared governance, recruiting of students and professional commitment to exercise physiology.
Duties and Responsibilities
The expectations and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Teaching in at least one of the following areas: pediatric or geriatric exercise physiology, applied strength and conditioning, exercise for special populations, community wellness, ethical practice, sociological aspects of health and wellness, public health, or administration. Assist in the accreditation process of American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and ability to meet requirements for certified exercise physiologist. Ability to contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of the program. Practicum coordinator. Participation in profession. Advising of students. Assisting with programmatic requirements such as assessment, mentorship, and direct supervision of students while providing exercise physiology services in area of specialty. Assisting with the program objectives, teaching, and achieving diversification of exercise physiology students. Ability to meet University, Department and Program requirements for ongoing scholarly activity and service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- The successful candidate will have a minimum of a Master’s (post graduate) degree in exercise physiology or a related field, PhD preferred.
- Demonstrated practicum/internship leadership experience.
- Minimum of three years of experience as an Exercise Physiologist or related profession.
- Previous college teaching experience.
- Effective communication and computer skills appropriate for the university setting.
- Terminal degree in Exercise Physiology or a related discipline.
- Certified or Registered Exercise Physiologist or other equivalent certifications based upon field.
- Previous experience in a variety of exercise physiology, wellness or healthcare settings working with diverse populations.
- Knowledge in Qualtrics or other similar electronic survey/database system
- Demonstrated commitment to establishing relationships, communication and teaching that fosters inclusion, justice, diversity and equality but not limited to gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and religion
