We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp positions at Camp La Jita. Camp La Jita meaning “precious possession” was aptly chosen as the name for our resident camp on the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia, Texas. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.
Unit Leaders & Assistant Unit Leaders (Summer Camp Counselors)
Reports to: Assistant Camp Director
Purpose: Participate as a member of the camp administration team to carry out responsibilities for the planning and implementation of Girl Scout program in an outdoor setting; responsible for the overall safeguarding of camper and staff, safety and security during activities.
Essential Functions:
- Unit Leaders will supervise unit staff while maintaining a friendly productive atmosphere.
- Unit staff acts as a role model for campers and staff in behavior and attitude, following the Girl Scout Promise and Law as well as camp procedures and adhere to national and council policies, procedures, and plans.
- Unit Leaders will ensure inclusion of the unit staff and allowing them to be part of decision making and program planning, while sharing leadership roles and responsibilities of camp functions.
- Unit staff will ensure inclusivity among campers – there will be a variety of backgrounds (racial, economic, religious), knowing each girl and must be able to accept and try to understand.
- Awareness of health and physical well-being of the campers and report any concerns to the Health Supervisor.
- Must be able to help girls plan and implement activities for the unit – camp programs may include but are not limited to cookouts, hiking, games, art projects, folk dancing, camping out overnight, dramatics and singing.
- Assist in unit along with hosting, camp housekeeping and sanitation.
- Share responsibilities for building good relations with parents and visitors in camp.
- Responsible for record keeping, requisitions, and care for supplies and equipment.
- Report to the ranger any repairs or supplies that are needed.
- Guide campers in a positive manner in accepting responsibility for the care and beauty of their surroundings and help develop pride in their unit.
- Participate in all camp activities and perform other duties as assigned.
- Attend weekly staff meetings.
Job Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older
- Successful completion of a background check
- First Aid and CPR certified is highly preferred
- Attend training sessions for the position June 5, 2023 – June 9, 2023
- Must reside at camp June 5, 2023 – August 5, 2023 (some weekends are required, will be given an alternate day off)
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable means of transportation
- Must enjoy working with youth
- Experience with child interaction and supervision (camp setting is a plus!)
- Willingness to work as a team member
- Good communication and problem-solving skills
- Flexibility, energy and good sense of humor
- Girl Scout experience is a plus!
Physical and Environmental Demands:
- Continuous outdoor activity and exposure to weather (heat, sun, humidity, etc.).
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and twisting of the upper body.
- Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Capable of lifting 30 pounds.
- Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with available equipment and facilities.
